The ins and outs of using blusher

Makeup

the ins and outs of blusher

When it comes to putting on blusher, some people get it right but a whole lot of people get it wrong. It’s almost like the ones who get it wrong put very little thought into the colour and formula of their blusher and then simply dab the product onto their face in hopes that things will miraculously work out well for them –even though it rarely ever does.

Being smart about applying blush can save you some money but most importantly, it can save you a lot of time. Finding a skin-type appropriate formula and a colour that will make you look the most natural will help make the whole blusher application process much easier.

So which formulas do I get to choose from?

Power – this is probably one of the easiest formulas out there to use, especially since it works well on all skin tones.

Cream – this type goes on very smoothly and leaves a dewy finish. They work best for dry-skin types.

Cream/Powder – this goes on like cream but then dries to a long-lasting powder finish. It is best suited for normal skin-types.

Gel – this gives a sheer colour, but since blending gel blushers can be a bit trickier, they work the best when you have smooth skin.

Cheek Tints – these can be a bit like gel blush. They give a stained look, but can be very difficult to blend. Cheek tints work best with smooth skin.

Chubby Pencils – these are pretty easy to blend and work well with normal to dry skin types.

Pot Rouge – these are usually packaged in little pots and provide a sheer stain on the cheeks. They are suited for normal to dry skin types.

As you can see, blushers come in different shapes or forms and there is usually something out there for everyone. Once you have the right formula, choosing the right colour should be your next step.

mac blushers

The pinch test

This is probably one of the best ways to find a blusher that will make you look the most natural. All you have to do is pinch one of your cheeks and then find a shade that is closest to the colour of your cheek when you pinch (it works all the time). Hold up a few different shades near your face until you find the right colour.

Applying blusher

Once you have both your formula and colour sorted, you can think about the whole application process. When applying blusher, it is always a good idea to use as little as possible at first and then build it up gradually. If using powder blush, start closer in the apples of the cheeks and brush outward toward the hairline and then down to soften the edges. Your face should look balanced and natural. If you need to soften any heavy application then you can use a powder puff!

A tip from the professionals:

Using two shades of blush, apply your natural colour and then add a pop of a brighter colour on top. The natural shade looks great at first, but often fades easily. The brighter shade alone is often great for the evening, but too much of a contrast for everyday. This layering technique offers natural brightness.

Must-have beauty tools for the skincare obsessive

Beauty/ Skincare

MUST-HAVE BEAUTY TOOLS

This year, I’ve decided to revolutionise my beauty regime. I know, I know, it’s a big step for me – especially since I’m so used my own ways of doing things! But I guess there’s no harm in trying new things, and besides, “new year, new me,” right?

To kick things off, I’ve gotten myself a deep cleansing brush. ‘Waste of money,’ I hear some of you say, but it’s actually been doing a pretty good job considering how much (or how little) I ended up paying for it!

So for this post, I’ll be going through some of the beauty tools I’ve already started using as well as the ones I’m in the process of ordering. I will be getting most – if not all – of these products:

Konjac sponge

konjac sponge

Konjac sponges are all the rage in Japan! They’re made from vegetable fibers and mineral rich extracts. The one thing that really caught my eye about these guys is that you can get them in different colours to target different skin types. For instance, the black sponge gets it’s colour from bamboo charcoal and it’s great for oily skin or for those who are prone to breakouts, while the red sponge is your ticket if you have dry and sensitive skin! You can also get it in green, pink or the original white konjac sponge with no colour. They help you can cleanse, exfoliate and remove impurities from the skin. Since the konjac plant is 100% alkaline, using it on the face helps balance the PH level of the skin. The one thing that’s important to note about these bad boys is that they have a shelf life. Since konjac sponges aren’t  made from synthetic fibers, you’d probably have to bin it every 4 – 5 weeks, depending on how often you use it!

PRICE:£6.99 – £11, Amazon

Comedone extractor (blackhead extractor)

comedone extractore for blackheads

This metal tool is used to unclog blocked pores. You can get ones that have a single loop on one end as well as the ones that have a loop on either end to accommodate for bigger pores. Usually, licensed estheticians and dermatologist use this tool. But in this day and age, it is available for the general public to buy either online or in their local pharmacy. When you’re using one of these guys, you have to be very careful about how much pressure you apply; too little and it won’t work, but too much and you could be left with scarring! The best way to do it with minimal scarring is to follow these two steps:

  1. Disinfect the blackhead extractor with rubbing alcohol and then warm your skin with a cloth or a steamer to open up the pores.
  2. Gently press down on the blackhead with the tool and if the blackhead doesn’t come out, leave it alone and try again another time!

PRICE: £2.99 – £10.99, Amazon

Deep facial cleansing brush

3d cleansing brush

A lot people think it’s enough to use their finger tips, a good cleanser and a few splashes of water to clean their face. However, it doesn’t always do the job properly, especially after spending the day wearing a full face of makeup! A deep cleansing brush gets right into your pores to get rid of all the dirt and oil your skin builds up during the day. It gives the skin an extra glow – not to mention that squeaky clean feeling! There are so many available in the market today so you really do have a lot to choose from. The one I recently bought is called the ELISHACOY 3D spin cleaner. It is a battery operated machine that comes with two different speeds. What I liked the most about it is the fact that it comes with two different brushes; a normal one for the entire face and blackhead brush for targeted areas.

PRICE: $43.08, Wishtrend

Face steamer

facial steamer

Face steamers have been out for quite some time now, but it seems as though they are being forgotten about with all the other revolutionary systems that are coming out. It’s quite unfortunate because facial steaming does absolute wonders to the skin’s complexion. It stimulates blood circulation, which increases nutrients and oxygen to the skin, giving it a rosier and more youthful glow. Although it has it’s many benefits, it’s important to limit it to only one steam a week – just like exfoliating, you don’t want to over do it, otherwise it will have a negative effect on your skin.

PRICE: £15.99 – £60+ on Amazon

Derma roller

derma roller

This guy looks a bit scarier than the other products, and at first glance, you probably wouldn’t guess that it’s a beauty tool at all. However, this micro needle roller is a salon-level skin treatment that can be used at home for skin problems such as hyperpigmentation, cellulite, stretch marks and acne. It works by creating miniature punctures in the skin and pushing the pores open for a while. The body then releases growth factors that stimulate the production of collagen, the stuff that keeps your skin looking fresh and plump. You can get different sized needles to target different problems, but if you are just starting off, it’s always better to go for the smallest needle!

PRICE: £6.00 – £20+ on Amazon

Hope you found this post useful! First triers, please note: if you have any severe skin conditions, be sure to consult your doctor before trying any of these tools at home! Good luck! 🙂

What not to do after a breakup

Dating

the breakup film

After a breakup, you may feel a combination of many emotions: disappointment, heartbreak and sometimes even regret. The aftermath of a long or shortterm relationship is never pretty, and in cases where a few bottles of wine are involved, it can get a bit messy – I know this, all too well!

While blaring ‘I Will Survive’ in your room every morning and although making a cow out of yourself at a drunken karaoke session are both very much acceptable – in my books anyways, there are just some things that you should never ever doing after a bad breakup.

If the word pride means anything to you, then you will not and you must not do any of the following things:

Contact his family members

Just because his mother adored you, it doesn’t give you a reason to start ringing her and checking up to see how she is doing or asking her how things have been. You didn’t ring her when you thought she was going to be your mother in-law so why the sudden interest in ‘her’ life now? Cut the crap, we all who you’re really asking about!

Create a page for stalking

When your ex gets a friend request from someone who recently joined Facebook just days after the breakup, they might just get a bit suspicious. Let’s face it; most people have had their Facebook accounts longer than they can remember, so spare yourself the embarrassment of setting up a Facebook account for stalking purposes. Remember your pride!

one to adele

Listen to depressing music for too long

Yes, we all love Adele, and yes, we are all clearly aware of what listening to Ed Sheeran does. But whatever you do, don’t dwell on the pain for too long, otherwise you will just be stuck and unable to get out of that mind frame. They say crying is good for the soul, so do allow yourself to shed a few tears, but don’t let it drag on for longer than it should! #StayStrong

Go on a Facebook rant

I know we live in a digital age, and social media plays a big part in most of our lives. But can we just leave Facebook out of it? We are preserving our pride, taking the high road and all that jazz. Pick up kick boxing if you must, apparently it’s a good way to let off steam. Just don’t put your business out there for Facebook to see.

Carry yourself like a hobo

We all have a hoody reserved for those ‘I’ll never get over it,’ moments. It allows us to sulk and feel sorry for ourselves in the comfort of our own homes – or in the home of a good friend. But, you know what they say: looking good is feeling good. Putting on your heels and getting a bit dolled up makes all the difference in the world. Try it out, you might surprise yourself!

end of

Feed your emotions

After a breakup, men usually hit the gym and women usually turn to food for comfort. But while you’re eating away and getting bigger, he is lifting weights and getting fitter.  I’m not saying you should start bodybuilding or anything, but instead of feeding your emotions, take up a fun class like Steps or Zumba. Not only will it help your mental state, it will also help you physically!

Befriend his ex

Purposely befriending someone who used to go out with the person you once were –and probably still are – crazy about, is simply a recipe for disaster! Man bash all you like, but do to it with a trusted friend and not the psycho ex – unless of course, you want to graduate to that title? I didn’t think so.

Jump into bed with a stranger….. or a friend

You feel like crap, and a bit of male attention would be nice right about now. But whatever you do, do not, I repeat, do NOT jump into bed with a complete stranger – or any of your male friends for that matter. Kissing is fine. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of lip locking every now and again. So long as you don’t do it with a friend as you will only regret it (not that I know anything about doing things that you shouldn’t be with your friends…. but I’d imagine that’s how one would feel, right?)

The point is, there are just some things you shouldn’t do after a breakup, and these 8 are some of them! Hope you all have a fab day xxx

Ziaja Olive Leaf Face & Body Collection

product review/ Skincare

ziaja olive leaf collection

This year, Ziaja Skincare is celebrating their 25th year anniversary. To mark the big occasion, Polish founders Aleksandra and Zenon have decided to launch a new olive leaf range that is natural, effective and affordable.

Although the products in the Olive Leaf Face & Body Collection are budget friendly, they work like magic! Ziaja products are made from simple and natural ingredients that are safe to use on pretty much all skin types.

Here are the three products from this collection that were recently sent out to me for review:

Olive Leaf Duo-Phase Makeup Remover 120ml (€4.49)

ziaja makeup remover

I’ve always been very sceptical of makeup removers, as I’ve found that a lot of them don’t really match their claims. However, this product does a surprisingly good job when it comes to removing makeup, it even manages to scrap off the most waterproof of mascaras! This product has a water phase which gently cleanses the skin and an oil phase which softens the makeup and takes it off in one sweep – hence the ‘duo-phase.’ The formula is fragrance and colourant free!

Olive Leaf Gel Scrub Micro-Exfoliating 200ml (€5.99)

ziaja scrub

As a huge face scrub enthusiast, I can be very particular about the exfoliators I use. I generally like my face scrubs to be specifically for my face and my face alone – it’s all about that special treatment! This product however is for body too, so I was a bit unsure about using it on my face. When I finally did, I found that it was quite harsh and even after washing, the micro beads were not the easiest to get off! I’d recommend this scrub to be used on the body, rather than my face.

Olive Leaf Regenerating Mask with Hyaluronic Acid (€0.69c)

ziaja face mask

Unlike most of the store-bought face masks I’ve tried, this product does not dry up on your face – hallelujah! It is super gentle on the skin and it more or less acts as a firming and regenerating moisturiser! When you apply it, leave it on for 10 minutes and then use a cotton pad dipped in water to remove it. It leaves a residue of moisturiser in the end so all you have to do is rub it in. With this product, you don’t need to worry about trying to remove the remaining of a face mask from your hairline at all! Not to mention the fact that it contains Hyaluronic acid and youth vitamins that revives tired looking skin!

Have you used any of the Ziaja products before? If so, I’d love to know how you got on! 🙂 For those of you who are still new to this brand, you can find Ziaja online at www.originalbeauty.ie, SHAWS department stores, MULLIGANS pharmacies, TOTAL HEALTH pharmacies and in independent pharmacies nationwide.

5 affordable makeup dupes for high-end products

Makeup/ product review

There’s nothing worse than setting your eyes on a new lippy, falling in love with it and then realising that it is way over your normal lipstick budget. ‘Steal or splurge?’ is the question I find myself asking when I’m trying to decide how badly I really need –or want – that €35 lipstick.

While some high-end products are well worth the splurge, others shouldn’t even cost half as much as they do. I’ve put together a dupe list for some popular makeup products out there for the days that you don’t think that €35 lippy is worth it!

1. Maybelline Eye Studio Colour Tattoo 24hr Cream Shadow in Creamy Beige & MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Groundwork

MAC PAINT POT PROLONG WEAR

I own both of these products, and I can honestly say that if you put each of these on a different lid, nobody would notice! The two colours are very close to the same shade. The one thing about the Maybelline is that it tends to crease, so be sure to use an eye primer.

With Maybelline, you save €13.35

2. L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara & Diorshow Mascara

l'oreal volumious

Both L’Oreal Voluminous and Diorshow have a similar brush. The shape helps separate the lashes and add some length to them. But, the award-winning Diorshow has a clumpier formula so it dries out much quicker than Voluminous.

With L’Oreal Voluminous, you save €14.01

3. Rimmel Kate Matte Lipstick in Kiss Of Life 111 & Mac Ruby Woo

MAC RUBY WOO AND RIMMEL

Both lipsticks are super saturated in colour and make you stand out almost immediately. MAC’s idea of matte is very different compared to Rimmel’s. Ruby Woo is extremely dry, while the Rimmel lippy is slightly more moisturisng. Revlon Matte Red Lipstick in Really Red (€10.69) is another dupe for the infamous Ruby Woo.

With Rimmel, you save €12.51

4. Sleek Brow Kit & Benefit Browzing Kit

SLEEK BROW KIT BENEFIT BROWZING KIT

Benefit Browzing Kit and Sleek brow kit are so identical, it makes me laugh! From the packaging, to the compact mirror and the little tweezers, these two products are pretty much two peas in a pod! However, the Benefit kit comes in three shade, while the Sleek kit comes in four.

With Sleek, you save €24.01

5. Smashbox Halo Highlighting Wand & No7 Skin Illuminator

SMASH BOX HIGHLIGHTER

Both of these highlighters have a glimmery brightening effect on the cheek bones. The Smashbox Highlighting Wand is easier to use because of it’s packaging. The No 7 Illuminator has a wider brush, but it leaves that overall radiant look on the face – No wonder So Sue Me always looks so glam!

With No 7, you save €18.75

If you have any more dupes to add, feel free to comment below!

Makeup tips for Valentine’s Day

Makeup/ Tips

valentine's day gift

The first thing that springs to mind for a Valentine’s Day look is the red lip: a defined and sultry red lip. But what comes after that? Not a lot of people get that far!

When it comes to Valentines Day makeup, your look should be three things: subtle, but not invisible, sexy, but not slutty and effortless, but not lazy. These three things combined will surely give your date something to admire  and who knows, they might even get you another date 😉

Tip #1: Subtle, but not invisible

subtle but not invisible makeup

Like any other day, your face should not look like it’s caked with makeup. There’s nothing attractive about having foundation streaks across the face or under your jaw line. Keep your base light and natural and when choosing a blusher, use a colour that is close to your natural skin tone.

Steps:

  1. Cleanse, tone and moisturise the face.
  2. Prep it with primer.
  3. Apply foundation and then a bit of concealer on the areas that need extra coverage.
  4. Use a light bronzer to contour cheek bones.
  5. Add a pop of colour on the cheeks.

Tip #2: Sexy, but not slutty

valentine's day makeup

The iconic 50s look of the winged liner and a red lip always gets a few heads turning. When done correctly, a winged liner just oozes of sexiness. The red lip just tops that off! Be sure to take your time when doing your winged liner, a small mistake can cost you more time. And to make your lipstick last longer, make sure you blot, apply your lippy (using a lip brush) and then blot again. Blotting helps the colour get right in there!

Steps:

  1. Prepare eye makeup with a neutral eye shadow.
  2. With a gel or liquid liner, draw a line from the outer corner of your eye towards the brow.
  3. Create the winged effect by bringing the line back to the center of your eye lid.
  4. Slightly thicken the line and then fill in the gaps.
  5. Set with black eye shadow.

Tip #3: Effortless,but not lazy

beach wave curls

I can’t think of a time or place where you can’t rock beach wave curls! They give off that ‘I woke up like this’ look, without making you feel like you actually did just roll out of bed! They’re effortless and sexy at the same time, and the best part is: you don’t even need a curler to pull of this look, straighteners work just fine!

Steps:

  1. Starting from the back of your head, grab a small section of your hair.
  2. Twist the hair around your fingers until you get to the top.
  3. Put the rolled hair in between your straighteners and hold for a few seconds before releasing.
  4. Repeat the process all the way through and then spray your hair with holding spray.
  5. Run your fingers through the curls to break them up

Hope you found these tips useful! If you have any suggestions, feel free to speak up! Also, don’t forget to enter my Valentine’s Day giveaway, as you’ll be in for a very lovely treat if you do win! 🙂

8 types of men you should avoid dating

Dating

big and carrie

I can’t sit here and say that every single one of my exes were idiots, because that would be a lie. But there were certainly one or two – okay maybe three – four max, that I would gladly give that title to.

If all the years that I’ve spent being in either a serious relationship or in a confused situationship, has taught me anything, it is this: there are just some guys you need to steer clear of.

These are the type of men who add absolutely no value to your life – dead weights, is what I call them.  All they do is waste your time, energy and emotions – and there’s nothing worse than wasted emotions, right?

So if you want to avoid listening to ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me,’ while scoffing down the unwanted chocolate you found at the back of your press from last Christmas, then here are some of the men you should stay away from:

it's not you it's me

The eager beaver

He puts pressure on you to meet your parents, he drops random hints about moving in together and you are still unsure about whether or not you had much of an input on having sex with him for the first time – oh it’s all coming back now, isn’t it? The eager beaver doesn’t really care who he is with, as long as he has SOMEONE. He is just in a rush to settle down and find a woman to take care of him – and then he’ll probably have someone else on the side.  Spare yourself the heartache and move on.

The unreliable one

He always says he’s going to take you out, you always hear him talking about how he’d like to spend a weekend away with you. But these things never actually happen, do they? If his actions aren’t matching his words now, don’t expect things to be any different a few months down the line. He’s good at talking the talk, but he ain’t very good at walking the walk. The unreliable one needs to be reminded of where the front door is.

unreliable men

The one who can’t keep his pants up

We all love sex. There’s no arguing that. But if he wants to get dirty between the sheets at every second of the day, then how can you ever trust him to be loyal when you’re not around? Or God forbid, you have an injury and are unable to perform as you normally would? Exactly. Three or four times a day? Absolutely fine. But wanting it all day every day is never a good sign, and it may also call for some professional help.

The one foot in and one foot out kinda guy

He uses his past as an excuse to not fully commit to you. Yet, judging by his track record, his previous relationship don’t seem any different to the night time visit arrangement you have with him now. He is just trying to have his cake and eat it too and is using ‘heartbreak’ as a way to avoid having a real relationship with you. This kind of guy needs to take both of his feet and keep them out. #ByeFelicia

The one who always seems to be short on cash

If it’s not ‘I forgot my wallet at home,’ it’s ‘there has been a delay with my payment.’ Either way, you are starting to wonder whether he even owns a bank account or not. The one who always seems to be short on cash is a pro when it comes to excuses and me thinks him and Mr. Unreliable up there should get together some time.

i'll hold you down

The one with zero ambition

He barely made it through school, and he now spends his days sitting in front of the telly watching sports. He has no idea where his life is going – not that he even cares – and he doesn’t seem to be having any positive influence on your life. As the saying goes ‘a man who can’t commit to himself, can not commit to anyone else,’ I’m pretty sure that says it all.

The one you can’t seem to read

He sends you ambiguous messages and says things that you never fully comprehend. You think he is interested in you, but you still have your doubts. Chances are, the guy is just stringing you along for his own amusement. If he really wanted to have some sort of relationship with you then he would make an effort and you wouldn’t be trying to decipher his messages at 2 o’clock in the morning!

The hot and cold kinda guy

Today you have his undivided attention, and tomorrow you’re wondering why you haven’t heard from him all day. If you’re wondering why you’ve suddenly stopped hearing from him, then that is probably because somebody else has his attention. I don’t know about you, but I’m not very good with sharing my men.

If you have one of these men in your life, then you already know what to do…… hope you all have a good evening 🙂

Healthy peanut butter cups

recipes

healthy peanut butter cups

This 3-ingredient peanut butter cup recipe is to die for! These chocolatey treats are thick and gooey (in a good way) and just melts in your mouth at every bite. They also taste much better than the store bought versions and as always, they’re much healthier too!

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Line a baking tray with 9 paper cases and set aside.
  2. Melt one tbsp of coconut oil in the microwave and then add the cocoa powder.
  3. Mix until you have a smooth chocolatey paste.
  4. If the mixture is too runny, you can add some more powder.
  5. Once the mixture has a smooth consistency, add one spoonful to the bottom of each paper cup.
  6. Put in the freezer for about 10 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile, melt the peanut butter and the remaining coconut oil in the microwave.
  8. Once you have a smooth paste, you can remove the chocolate layered cups from the freezer and put a spoonful of the melted peanut butter on top.
  9. Put back in the freezer for about 30 minutes or until everything is frozen.
  10. Enjoy!

P.S They taste much nicer than they look

Stila Cosmetics Press Day

Events

 2015-01-31 15.32.45

On Thursday evening, I was invited to attend the press launch of Stila Cosmetics Bomb Shell Collection in Harvey Nichols, Dundrum Shopping Centre.

Myself and some other lovely bloggers got the opportunity to preview the new Stila Collection SS15, which put a lot of focus on the much loved beauty trend of the strong and defined brow – my fave!

Being the brow fanatic that I am, I was more than just a little excited to test those bad boys out. As well as being showered with the newest and most popular Stila products, we got to meet Stila’s beautiful brand ambassador, Sascha Jackson. She gave us a masterclass on how to use some of their top products and even completed a full look on a model.

Before I show you the finished look, here are some of the products we were introduced to on the day:

Skincare glossary: what do these popular beauty terms really mean?

Beauty/ Skincare

dove ingredients list

We’re often told to go for products with certain ingredients. If you dry skin, you’re told to go for a moisturiser with an emollient and if you’re at the other end of the spectrum and have oily skin, then a cleanser with salicylic acid is your winning ticket. But what do these ingredients actually do? A clear understanding of how certain things function can help you make better choices when it comes to skincare products.

Here are a few popular words that you might have come across before and probably didn’t care to research because you ‘heard’ it was good:

E for Emollients

Emollients generally hold moisture in the skin. They keep the skin looking soft and supple. Some very popular and effective emollients would be avocado oil, shea butter and glycerine. If you have dry skin then always go for a moisturiser that has an emollient.

A for Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA)

AHA’s are naturally occurring acids found in milk and fruits. Generally, they help speed up the exfoliating process. This improves the texture of the skin and helps unclog nasty pores. Glycolic acid is one of the most commonly used AHAs.

A for Antioxidants

You’ve probably seen this word a couple of hundred times at this stage! Without getting too scientific, antioxidants keep the skin protected from harm caused by free radicals (damaged cells that can be problematic). Vitamins A, C and E, green tea, beta-carotene, and grape seed extracts are all highly effective antioxidants.

boots vitamin e night cream

E for Exfoliators

I love a good exfoliator! They are designed to help remove dead cells from the skin and help whatever you put on your face afterwards become for effective. As a rule of thumb, always look for an exfoliator that is designed especially for your face. Body scrubs are far too harsh to use on the delicate skin of la visage.

H for Humectants

Humectants absorb water from the air and help the skin retain moisture. Some very effective humectants include glycerin, algae extract and lactic acid.

B for Balms

Balms are super-rich moisturisers like shea butter or avocado extract that help target dry patches of the skin. They’re usually designed for people who have super dry skin but if you want a subtle glow on your face, you could warm some balm in between your hands and pat your cheeks after you’ve applied your makeup.

C for Collagen

Collagen is a fibrous protein that is present in the skin. When someone has high levels of collagen in their skin, it appears nice and firm. (I bet you just thought of someone there). As we age, the level of collagen declines and wrinkles begin to form. That’s why some older women – and even men – like to get injections, as they temporarily replace lost collagen.

R for Retinoids (Retin-A, Retinal, Renova)

Retinoids are derived from vitamin A. They are used in beauty products to fight acne and help build collagen to reverse the visible signs of aging. Since using retinoids makes the skin more sensitive to the sun, it is important to use an SPF. Some natural sources of retinoids include tomatoes, melon,fish-liver oils and leafy green vegetables.

sunscreen

SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

My favourite  S word! SPF measures  the degree of protection a product provides against harmful UVB rays from the sun. A lot of people are under the impression that an SPF should only be worn in the summer, however, it should be worn all year around.

S for Serums

Serums are corrective skin treatments that are highly concentrated and packed with ingredients to target specific skin problems. Uneven skin tone and dullness are usually it. Common ingredients found in serums would be vitamin C and green tea extract. They are generally applied after cleansing and before moisturising.

Vitamin K helps promote faster healing of swelling, bruising and skin irritation. A beauty product that contains this vitamin would be ideal for people with sensitive skin.

Vitamin E provides antioxidant protection. It protects the fatty acids in the skin which help keep the skin firm and young looking. Not many people know that vitamin E can act as a mild sunscreen as it has an SPF factor of 3.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that reduces the pigmentation of scars, making them less noticeable. High doses of vitamin C helps create a more even skin tone. Natural sources of this vitamin include oranges, red peppers and kiwis.

Next time you go shopping for a new beauty product, you will be able to see if it has the ingredients you need for your skin. I hope you found this useful! 🙂

Product review: The Eylure Brow Revolution

product review

eyelure the brow revolution

Eyebrow lovers, brace yourself, because the news just broke in! Eylure’s extensive new brow range is now available at Boyne Grove Pharmacy in the very lovely town of Drogheda (and I’m not just saying that because I live here!)

The name Eylure might ring a bell to some of you, as it is widely known for it’s range of falsh lashes. Now, Eylure has released a full line of eyebrow products to add to it; from eyebrow stencils for beginners to permanent eyebrow tint for the more confident gals, the Eylure eyebrow revolution has something for pretty much every lady!

I was very lucky to have had four of the products from this extensive brow range sent to me for review. And after a few weeks of using them – as often as I could – I’m now ready to reveal my final verdict. I hope you’re ready! 🙂

Eylure brow stencils (€6.49)

eylure the brow revolution

I think these stencils are a clever little tool for those who don’t know much about shaping their brows – especially since you have the option of four different arches; full, high, medium and slim. I didn’t find the stencils very useful because I have my own way of shaping my brows, so these brow templates weren’t very useful for me. However, I do think they’d be something makeup newbies would love!

Eylure Brow palette (€12.99)

EYLURE BROW PALETTE

This brow palette has become my holy grail product, I find it hard to go anywhere without it! It has the perfect combo for shaping your brows on the go and it also comes with a compact mirror – which I hardly use – because it’s a little TOO honest for my liking! Other than that, this product is definitely a winner! You can get it in three different shades;  blonde, mid brown and the shade I have, dark brown. It also comes with an angled brush that has a sponge applicator at the other end – a free brush is always a plus!

Here’s how to use this little trio:

  1. Sculpt: use the angled brush to apply the firm wax hold and shape the brow.
  2. Colour: fill in with the pigmented brow powder.
  3. Define: sweep a bit of matte highlighter under the arch for further definition.

Eylure nourishing brow oil (€10.99)

20150116_140905

I haven’t used this product  as much as I would have liked to. I started off great (used it every night for 2 weeks) and then once I started to see results, I might have gotten a bit lazy…. I think if I hadn’t stopped and used it every night without fail, I probably would have gotten better results. After all, this oil has a blend of rosemary, sweet almond and argan oil – the three miracle ingredients for nourishing and growing eyebrows!

Eylure permanent tint for brows (€12.99)

PERMANENT TINT

This product made my brows slightly darker than usual. It’s a very subtle change, as you can see from the pictures, but I do think the subtlety is good since it works even better with the other Eylure products! It comes with two little sachets and you just mix the contents together and apply it on your brows. Leave it on for 3 minutes and them remove with a damp cotton pad.

BDAAll in all, I would give the Eylure brow products a try. They’re affordable and I think the packaging looks amazing for a pharmacy brand. You can get it in McCabes Pharmacy, Sam McCauley Chemists, Shaws and now the Boyne Grove Pharmacy in Drogheda! 🙂
