5 reasons I received a Google alert for my name in 2018

lifestyle

I never in a million years would have thought that my blogging achievements in twenty eighteen could ever amount to half of the accomplishments I had with Enhance What’s Yours in 2017. In fact, I spent the early days of twenty eighteen (excuse the overuse of this millenial slang), crippled with the anxiety that I may had set the bar too high for myself in the previous year.

I mean, when an open letter that took less than fifteen minutes to write makes international headlines, how could I possibly envision myself topping that? Hell if I know how, but I did! And when I reflect upon the year I had with my blog and the opportunities that I’ve been afforded through a brand for which I have taken many sacrifices, I can’t help but look back with a greater sense of gratitude.

The gratitude I feel towards the brand I’ve created far exceed any sentiments I felt towards my blog accomplishments in previous times. That’s not to disqualify any of my past achievements or to say that they are less significant. But it is mainly because I feel that the knowledge that I accrued in my second year of freelancing has helped me recognise that luck can only get you so far.

You also have to be willing to do what others won’t.

So without further ado, here are some of the main reasons why I received Google alerts for my name in 2018 🙂

1. My TV debut for ground-breaking Channel 4 series

As many of you know from the series of blogs I’ve published around this topic, I was part of the diverse cast for a two-part Channel 4 documentary called Genderquake. Filming for this ground-breaking series took in the beautiful city of Brighton in October 2017 and the show finally aired in May of 2018.

Genderquake explored gender and sexuality in today’s world by having ten strangers from all parts of the gender spectrum cohabitate for a full week and have spirited discussions about sexual identity, gender and everything in  between!

Shortly after hitting the screens, Genderquake was nominated in the MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence Awards for Representation of LGBTQ, Non-Scripted which is more than any of us could have asked for or anticipated!

Knowing that my voice was part of a show that incited so much public interest both online and in real life is a great source of pride for me, particularly because I was so apprehensive about taking part in the first place.

Looking back now, I am so proud of my contribution on the show – taking the edits out of the equation of course! I met some truly wonderful souls and beautiful people who challenged my ideologies in ways that continue to intrigue me till today.

Twitter was also pretty gentle with me which was more reassuring than I care to admit. I had people from all backgrounds jump to my defense and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive 🙂

If you haven’t seen Genderquake yet, be sure to catch up on Channel 4 here.

2. Live TV appearance on Genderquake: The Debate

Following the release of the two-part documentary, Channel 4 aired a live debate in which myself and a few of the other cast members were invited to attend. The debate was hosted by news presenter Cathy Newman and saw a number of famous faces on the panel such as Caitlyn Jenner, Munroe Bergdorf, Germaine Greer, Ayo Caeser and Sarah Ditum.

While I had already been on television at this point, it was all still very new to me. To say I was hyperventilating at the thought of being on live TV would be be a complete understatement. Thankfully, I managed to answer Cathy Newman’s questions about my experience of being on the show with as much grace and elegance as the merlot I consumed allowed for.

Once again, a very proud moment for my inner nerdy introvert. You can see my response in this Twitter thread here.

3. Brand Ambassador role for Huawei Mobile Ireland

Huawei P20 Lite Review

While I did not receive a Google alert for this, I do think it is worth mentioning. I was given a brand ambassador role for Huawei Mobile Ireland which resulted in me creating exciting content and taking part in a sponsored campaign – not to mention getting a deadly new phone! 🙂

While I have done content placement and other sponsored content in the past, I had never been asked to work on a continuous campaign such as the one I did with Huawei Ireland. To put the cherry on top, the tweet I shared about the Story Sign app created by Huawei, performed incredibly well with an engagement rate of 3.9% and a reach of nearly 10k.

The media views I received in that one tweet even outperformed some of the ads shared by other influencers with twice or trice my Twitter following. I think all too often brands get fooled by influencers who appear to have a large following so knowing this gave me a completely new perspective on how to negotiate future collaborations with brands and it helped me see the value of my brand and what I have to offer.

4. Publication of first byline for thejournal.ie

This might not seem like such a big deal to some people. But for me it is everything.

Throughout my many years of navigating my way within the Irish blogging scene, I have always identified more as a writer than blogger: it’s the one thing I was always sure of. In my eyes, writing for an Irish news site is about more than just massaging my ego. In a weird sense, it validated my work as a writer.

I had never pitched an article before. But after my success, I hope to share more of my thoughts on dating, relationships and female sexuality to a wider audience in the future. Seeing my byline on thejournal.ie really gave me a high. Almost like runners high, but for writers – yes, I’m making it a thing!

If you have yet to read my article about making consent sexy – for the sake of both men and women, be sure to read it here.

5. Featured in iNews for viral open letter

iNews feature about viral story

Last but not least, I was recently featured in inews.co.uk where I was given the opportunity to share an honest account of how online trolling can affect a person’s well being. While I did write a blog post on how to deal with bad publicity, I had never really delved into the darker side of how I felt after the events that transpired online.

I finally mustered the courage to do exactly that in an interview with former HuffPost UK Editor, Poorna Bell for a feature in iNews. Much like many of my other endeavours and interviews, I was on the fence about this. But the award-winning journalist dealt with my story with great delicacy and care. Poorna was aware of the sensitivity of the topic during the whole interview process – even when she was trying to get to the core of what really happened.

I have so much respect for authentic journalists who strive to uncover accurate accounts of real life stories and I genuinely cannot thank Poorna enough for sharing mine in such a raw way.

To read my feature about the very real impact online trolling can have on a person’s well-being, click here.

A massive thank you to everyone who has been supporting me from day one! I wish each and every single one of you a sparkling New Year! I look forward to re-shaping my brand and blog for 2019 🙂

Boots Vitamin E Night Cream

Skincare/ Youthful Skin

boots vitamin e night cream

Hello all! For this post Bellefbeauty.com  is going to be looking at a product I’ve been using for some time now, (I feel almost selfish for keeping this from all of you for so long, sorry!) but I guess I just really wanted to make sure if Boots Vitamin E Night Cream has been helping me in any way at all, and my verdict is it certainly has!

I’ll be honest with you, I tend to get sucked into buying really expensive beauty products that don’t really do much at all, so when I decided to  give  Boots Vitamin E Night Cream a bash, I thought it wouldn’t be much of a loss if I didn’t like it, (especially as far as money is concerned)

boots vitamin e night cream

I find this cream to be quite thick in consistency as you can see, but I quite liked that to be honest as it sinks in pretty well on the skin leaving your face feeling pretty smooth.

After using Boots Vitamin E Night Cream overnight, I find that my face looks very fresh the next morning, as it isn’t greasy at all (always a good thing). I always find that my skin looks very smooth the next morning (and then I start running my errands…..)

The one thing that really stands out to me about this product is the scent, I love the scent of  it, especially compared to some of the creams I’ve used in the past this is exceptionally good!

I really don’t think a product like this should be overlooked, and it seems to be suitable for all skin types. If you’d like a night cream that won’t fork too much out of you, I’d highly recommend Boots Vitamin E Night Cream. Given it’s price point (4.59),  you really can’t go wrong……

If you’re a fan of Boots Vitamin E Night Cream, let me know in the comments section below! 🙂

D.I.Y Pore Strips

D.I.Y/ How To/ Natural beauty/ Skincare

diy porestrips

Yesterday, I decided that a bit of pampering was in order. I put on some relaxing music and started off by cleansing and exfoliating my face and then, I went on to steam it. This was followed by a not so pampering experience of peeling  pore strips off my whole face.

Not to scare you or anything, but it was pain-FUL! So please don’t make the same mistake I made and just keep it to a minimum!

So why use pore strips?

Using pore strips is a quick and easy way to get rid of the dirt/oil in the pores that cause blackheads. This is one of my biggest beauty concerns. I’ve used these strips more than just a couple times and I’ve found that they do actually make a difference.

So if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to get rid of pore-clogging build up, then I suggest you give this a try! 🙂

  1. Get two spoons of unflavored gelatine
  2. Mix it with two spoons of milk
  3. Mix up an microwave for 10 seconds
  4. Using a foundation brush, apply to affected area, namely nose, chin / forehead

Let this set on your skin for about 10 minutes and when it dries up, let the peeling begin! Once you remove everything,  you should be able to see the dirt/oil from your pores on the actual strips! I know, it’s disgusting – but at least it shows you did a good job!

Note: DO NOT make the mistake of putting it all over your face, it WILL BE painful! Just put it on certain parts of the face that need it. Also, don’t let it dry with a blow drier as it will get too dry and will be even more difficult to peel off.

Let me know if you decide to give this recipe a try, feel free to comment below! xx

How to make your lipstick last longer

How To/ lips

mac rebel

If you are one of those people who have to constantly worry about retouching your lips, search no further because on enhancewhatsyours.com you’ll find the top tips for having your lipstick last longer so the last thing you have to think about on a night out is constantly doing retouches on your lips (can be pretty annoying!)

So here’s how to make your lipstick last longer:

Prep your lips:

1. Exfoliate: I can’t stress how important lip exfoliation is for your lips, as you might have saw in my D.I.Y lip scrub, regular exfoliation replaces old cells with new cells which is a great way to keep your lips soft and subtle.

Note: If you’re preparing for a night out you can give your lips a gentle scrub with your toothbrush for a quick/fresh exfoliation

2. Lip balm: Before lipstick comes lip balm, let it settle on your lips to keep them moistened and prevent them from cracking. If there is any excess balm make sure you blot it off.

The nitty gritty:

inglot lip pencil 857

1.Lip liner: Line your lips starting from the cupids bow and then fill them in with the liner. This will lay a foundation for your lipstick. Here I’m using a lip liner by Inglot which I love because it’s highly pigmented and also has a lip brush at the other end. (It’s so good, I sometimes use it as a lipstick on it’s own!)

2. Lipstick: For the best results, apply your lipstick with a lipstick brush, as it allows the color to really get into the lip and stay on longer. Get a tissue and blot your lips a couple of times to press the color into your lips. After this, go for a second coat of lipstick.

I will be using Rebel by MAC it’s another one of my favorites. And as you can see, the two colors are quite similar so it’s just perfect because the lip liner won’t take away from the lipstick’s true color!

3. Concealer: As we do to get perfect eyebrows, use concealer to tidy up around the lips and give them a clean edge.

Note: I also like to use the highlighter from my Gosh BB Skin Perfecting Kit and apply it to my cupids bow, this will give you and effortless pout!

And that’s that, 5 simple steps to have your lipstick last longer! How do you normally apply your lipstick?

How to clean your makeup brushes

How To/ maintenance

how to clean makeup brushes

There’s nothing worse than using dirty makeup brushes on your face, first of all it isn’t the most hygienic thing in the world, and secondly you are basically asking for your skin to be terribly irritated (not exactly the best way to Enhance What’s Yours...)

The above picture is what you should avoid doing. You should avoid immersing the head of your makeup brushes into water – pretty sure Bobbi Brown would back me up on that. Since the hairs on the makeup brushes are glued to the base, even the most expensive brushes will come apart if you do this so you should really avoid soaking your makeup brushes into water.

So how do you clean your makeup brushes then?

how to clean makeup brushes

  1. Drop  a very gentle non-alcoholic soap (preferably baby shampoo) into the palm of your hand
  2. Swirl the bristles of your makeup brush around your palm after having wet the brush.
  3. Once covered in soap, rinse thoroughly until all the soap residue is gone.
  4. Squeeze out any excess moisture out of the bristles.
  5. To finish up, reshape the brush head with your fingers.

Drying Station: Let your makeup brushes dry flat and hanging off the edge of a counter so the bristles stay into perfect shape.

Note: When you’re drying your makeup brushes do NOT dry them in an upright position, or else the water settles into the glue which holds the bristles together at the base of each brush.

A deep cleaning of your makeup brushes is recommended between once a week or once a month- A bit of a stretch I know, but if you use your brushed regularly then once every 3 weeks. If you don’t use them as often, then you’re not required to wash them as often.

If once a month is far too long for you (or if you just want to be super hygienic), you can give your makeup brushes a quick clean cleaning in between deep washes.

For a quick clean just follow  the steps below:

how to clean makeup brushes

  1. 1. Spray a makeup brush cleaner on tissue
  2. 2. Swipe it around and add a few more spritz
  3. 3. Swipe it up and fourth until all the residues are removed

I’d be lying if I said I did this every time I finished using my brushes, but it’s something I do immediately if my sister used my makeup brush because she forgot hers. Other than that a good clean every 2 weeks just about does it for me!

Hope you’ll make use of this quick lesson, feel free to leave comments below!

How to have perfect eyebrows

brows/ eyebrows/ Eyes/ How To

how to have perfect eyebrows

Today, Bellefbeauty.com has another tutorial for you, and of course it would have to be about eyebrows, because anyone who knows me would know that I’m eyebrow crazy, to me,  it’s probably one of the fastest (and easiest) ways to Enhance What’s Yours (not to mention how perfect eyebrows just lift your face!)

So how can you have perfect eyebrows? It’s really simple, and as you can see, you really don’t need that many tools (so if you dare to leave your house without your eyebrows done, this is perfect for when you’re on the go!)

Without further ado, here are the steps for having perfect eyebrows:

eyeBROW-SHAPED-PERFECTLY

  1. Pluck out any unwanted hair – it will only get in the way!
  2. Comb out your eyebrows
  3.  Using an eyebrow pencil, outline your eyebrows to the shape that you want it to have.
  4.  Use an eyebrow powder that complements you (avoid using black alone even if you have dark hair)
  5. Fill in your brows using a brow brush
  6. Get a concealer
  7. Conceal above and below your brow using a concealer brush to perfect your brows and ensure that they are perfectly shaped
  8. Add a highlighter under your arch
  9. Voila! The complete look with some mascara!

Note: If you have stubborn brows, finish up with eyebrow gel- this will set your eyebrows and make sure your hairs are not flying around the place!

I know these eye brows are no Cara Delevingne (it wouldn’t be right to talk about eye brows and not give her a mention!) but you have to remember not everyone can have the same eyebrow shape.

If you’re unsure of what shape your eyebrows should have, check out my first post on perfect eyebrows.

Are you big into brows like myself, if so then how do you normally do your brows?
