The truth about carbs

Health

good carbs vs bad carbs

A low-carb diet has never been my thing. I have always been a firm believer that all foods should be consumed in moderation. That’s why I continue to be baffled by those who are constantly carb-counting or totting up their calories half-way through the day. In my eyes, carbs are not the enemy.

What a lot of people don’t realise is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with carbohydrates. Provided you eat the right ones and in the right quantities, carbs are needed for our brain and body to function normally. And I’m not just saying this because I am a carb addict – or bread addict – to be precise. I’m saying this because I have made a recent discovery that I’m going to share with you.

The human saliva contains an enzyme which helps breakdown starch into sugars. This means that biologically, we are supposed to eat carbohydrates – Mother Nature wants this for us people! It just comes down to whether we eat the right ones or not.

There are two types of carbohydrates: complex carbs (the good) and simple carbs (not so good). Complex carbs take time to digest. These include whole and unrefined grains, fibre and vegetables. Simple carbs on the other hand, provide the body with a quick burst of energy. These include refined starches and sugars added during food processing.

Good carbs

good carbs

Unrefined grains

Unrefined grain products like brown rice, whole-grain pasta, beans, whole wheat bread, buckwheat, oats etc are considered to be good carbs. They are rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre, which are all essential to your health. Because they are slowly digested, they cause a slower change in blood sugar levels.

Fibre

Fibre is a good carb that isn’t digested by our body. However, it is needed for intestinal health as it aids with digestion and ensuring that damaging toxins are excreted from the body. Foods high in fibre include leafy greens such as broccoli, beans, lentils, apples and pears.

Not so good carbs

bad carbs

Refined starches

White-flour breads, pasta and rice. Crackers, biscuits and other baked packaged foods are all considered as refined carbs. The bran, hull and fibre are removed from the grain during the refinement process meaning they contain little to no fibre and a lot of minerals and nutrients are lost.

Refined sugars

Refined sugars are probably one of the worst things you can feed your body with. These include sucrose, lactose, molasses and fruit juice concentrates. High level of sugar consumption can lead to extreme fluctuations in energy, more sugar cravings and mood swings.

In a nutshell: good carbs take time to digest in the body and as a result, you stay fuller for longer. They include whole-grain foods and vegetables. Bad carbs give you a sudden burst of energy and as a result cause a fluctuation in blood sugar levels. They include sweets and refined starches.

So before you unfairly black-list some carb-loaded foods, ask yourself this: is it a good carb or not? 🙂

The Body Shop: African Ximenia Scrub

product review

african ximenia scrub

Summer might be well over, but that doesn’t mean we should stop pampering ourselves. If you know me at all, then you would know that I enjoy a relaxing bath: I play some soft music in the background, light up a few scented candles and just enjoy the moment.

I used to think I had everything I needed to loosen up and enjoy some ‘me’ time. Then, I was introduced to a product which to some extent, made me question whether I’ve been doing it wrong all along:  The African Ximenia Scrub.

african ximenia 1

This product is from The Body Shop’s Spa Of The World collection which launched back in August. The range itself features pampering-session products such as body oils and clays, which were created using naturally sourced ingredients from around the globe.

As the name suggests, the African Ximenia Scrub, was developed using handpicked ximenia fruit seeds from the ‘Tree of Life’ in Namibia.  These seeds create a rich oil, which in this case, helps your skin feel softer and smoother after exfoliation.

What I particularly liked about this scrub is the texture of it. It has a luxurious velvety texture that feels soft and silky on the skin. A lot of body scrubs that I have tried in that past were pretty rough on the skin and this can be quite irritating at times. The African Ximenia Scrub does the exact opposite.

Although this scrub is gentle on the skin, it still does an amazing job at removing dead skin cells and making your body feel lovely and sleek. The scent of the African Ximenia Scrub has a lingering effect on the skin, even after drying up. In my books, this is always a bonus because in some subconscious way, it helps keeps you in relaxation mode! 🙂

This scrub is part of The Body Shop’s 5-step relaxing ritual and is available to purchase online or in The Body Shop at €30.50(320ml). Thanks again to the Revolve girls for sending this out to me!

We're often told to go for products with certain ingredients. If you dry skin, you're told to go for a moisturiser with an emollient and if you're at the other end of the spectrum and have oily skin, then a cleanser with salicylic acid is your winning ticket. But what…

Nima Brush turns 3!

Events

nima brush turns 3 party 2

Last Thursday evening, myself and a few familiar faces attended the third birthday of Nima Brush, an Irish owned brand which specialises in making quality, and affordable makeup brushes.

I was introduced to Niamh Martin, the mastermind behind this successful brand, a few years back at one of the first blogger meet ups I ever attended. Looking back at what she has accomplished since then, I think she is living proof that staying focused and  having a strong support system will help your business thrive.

nima turns 3

Today, the brand has a number of collection sets as well as makeup accessories to keep your brushes lovely and safe. Niamh does workshops where you can learn to care for your brushes and how to properly use them. On top of that, Nima Brush won the RSVP Beauty Awards in 2014 and they are also winners of the U Magazine Beauty Awards ’15.

But what I like the most about Nima Brush is the fact that each of the brushes is named after someone in Niamh’s life. This adds a personal touch to it, and if you don’t already know, I’m a sucker for that kinda thing – makes me feel so emosh! Also, they are made of natural fibres and strong brush ferrules to ensure they last as long as possible and most importantly, so that you can get the most usage out of them.

So what did the night entail? Well for starters, a lot of bubbly. Sweets, competitions, spot prizes and a glance at the 13 piece brush set, where we had the option to purchase brushes.I didnt buy any brushes on the night because luckily, I was one of the few gals who won a prize – I never usually win, so I was absolutely chuffed to find a winning ticket in my gold envelope and then to be prized with these little guys here:

NIMA BRUSH TURNS 3

All in all, it was a very successful night and I was happy to have catch ups with my favourite people! I’m really looking forward to using my Nima Mitt as well as my new brushes! I actually already own one of their angled brushes, but I suppose you can never have enough brushes, especially when it’s a Nima!

A huge congrats to Niamh and the Nima Brush team, and a big thank you to the Bronze staff and everyone who contributed to the success of the night.

Quinoa Sushi Rolls

recipes

quinoa sushi

Today’s blog post was actually supposed to be on one of The Body Shop’s scrubs that I am absolutely addicted to – I seriously need to get a review up before I finish it all! However, seeing it is my mother’s birthday and she loves sushi as much as I do, I decided to treat her with a lovely little lunch in bed. And since I always take pics of every little step when it comes to cooking (weird habit), I thought I’d share the recipe with you guys too!

So if you’re a fan of traditional sushi, but are also looking to cut down on white carbs, then this quinoa sushi recipe is for you 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 150g quinoa, cooked
  • 3 sheets of nori
  • 6 crab sticks
  • 1 slice of salmon

Directions:

1. Cook the quinoa as per instructions (be sure to add about three drops of vinegar to the quinoa while cooking). Once the quinoa is cooled for about 10 minutes, put four tablespoons on a sheet of nori.

2. Use the back of a metal spoon to spread it across the sheet and flatten it out. Be sure not to put too much on the border closest to you and leave or the one furthest from you.

3. Place two crab sticks (or your preferred filling) side by side, at the end closest to you.

4.Tightly roll over the filling, pressing down as you go upwards. Continue to do so until you get to the very end.

5. Use a sharp knife to cut the sushi into 6 to 8 parts and put a small piece of salmon over the cut pieces.

6. Repeat process with the other two sheets and then serve with pickled ginger, soy sauce – or both!

Top tips:

  • Try not to overload the nori with qunioa as your sushi will be harder to roll and most likely fall apart when you try cutting it.
  • Always leave a border around the edges, particularly the one furthest from you.
  • If you squeeze tightly, and press downwards you have a better chance of making sure the sushi rolls stick.
  • If the edges don’t seal properly,  dip you fingers into water and gently wet the edges of the nori before trying again.
  • Have fun with it!

Oh and it’s pronounced keen-wa! 🙂
