October beauty favourites!!!

product review

Happy first of November everyone, I hope you are all as unprepared for Christmas as I am – it’s just way too soon! As you can probably tell, I am still not over last month, so this blog post is going to be about some of my favourite beauty products over the last couple of weeks! 🙂

The Body Shop Vanilla Pumpkin Body Butter, €20.95*

I am a big fan of The Body Shop. I tend to obsess with most (if not, all) their beauty products. After having tried & sampled a number of products from this brand over the years, I have to say that the one thing I feel they do exceptionally well is scent – they are absolute masters in that department. Mind-blowing fragrances are something they seldom get wrong and this year’s Halloween range is yet another testament to that.

The Body Shop launched a collection of products themed around two indulging ingredients: vanilla & pumpkin. Of the products I sampled from The Vanilla Pumpkin range, the body butter is by far my favourite. It has a rich texture that leaves the skin feeling soft and moisturised. The spicy sweet smell is subtle, yet long lasting and I wouldn’t blame you for wanting to eat this stuff as it smells more than just a little edible – 100% yes from me! 🙂

Clarisonic Mia 2, €149.00

I’m sure some of you beauty junkies are thinking ‘this is old news,’ well I’ll tell you something. Just because something is old, it doesn’t make it ineffective! I actually bought this product a couple of years ago and absolutely hated it! It broke me out – which at the time, I didn’t understand was a normal purging process – so I stopped using it. Fast forward two years and I decided to give it another go, I thought my skin was so bad that I wouldn’t be losing much by trying it again.

I absolutely love it now and genuinely never feel ‘clean’ unless I use my Clarisonic. The cleansing system has over 300 movements per second to clean and soften the skin. All you need is 60 seconds around the face to remove makeup, impurities and excess sebum, leaving you with squeaky clean skin ready for a better skin care regime!

Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask, €76.99*

If you follow me on social media then you would know that I was recently sent a Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask. When I first tried it, I have to admit that I was rather nervous as it was nothing like I had ever seen before. But after a couple of tries, this innovative mask is growing on me.

This mask uses light therapy to target the bacteria that causes acne in the skin. As someone who has suffered with acne for as long as I can remember, I was excited to use this. I already love it so far, so cannot wait to see the end result in a few weeks from now. Best part? You get a spa-like treatment at home – and in only 10 minutes! 🙂

Skinade* collagen supplement

I have a second innovate skincare product worth mentioning on my list today, except this one can be consumed – Skinade.  This high performance anti-aging collagen drink combines six natural ingredients to improve the skin from the inside out.

It comes in either a ready-mixed 150ml bottle or 15ml sachet liquid concentrate – which is pretty handy if you’re looking to take one on the go! While I needed a 90-day course to see results, some people saw improvements in their skin after as little as 30 days of taking Skinade – changes in skin texture, complexion and overall suppleness.

Here are some of the pros and cons I found with this product:

Pros:

  • Natural peach flavour is very easy to drink
  • Free from lactose, gluten and dairy
  • It doesn’t contain hormones, gmos, added sugar, artificial flavours or colours
  • It uses natural ingredients
  • The liquid form offers an absorption rate of at least 90%

Cons:

  • It doesn’t cure skin conditions
  • Some may find it a bit pricey

To read more about how Skinade works or to buy a 30-day trial, have a look at their website.

Do you have any October favourites? If so, would love to hear what they are! Feel free to tweet me @FilomenaKaguako 🙂

The Body Shop Amazonian Saviour Balm*

product review

For centuries, Amazonian communities have relied on potent natural ingredients to care for wounded and tattooed skin. These same natural oils are used to enrich our Amazonian Saviour Multi-Purpose Balm

If you know me personally, then you would know that I don’t just use the hashtag girls with ink for the heck of it – although I wouldn’t put it past me if I did, seeing that I have a habit of exaggerating with my hashtags….

Nonetheless, that particular hashtag is one that I use with good reason; I have a tattoo on my ankle. I’ve had it for about ten years at this stage and like any tattoo, it has faded overtime. So when the opportunity to try The Body Shop Amazonian Saviour Multi-Purpose Balm (€15.00) arose, I couldn’t turn it down.

This product has an oil-rich texture making it beneficial to use on more than just tatted skin. While it does a stellar job at reviving the appearance of tattoos, it also nourishes dry skin and is said to improve the appearance of skin marks.

The Body Shop Multi-Purpose Balm,€15.00

It is 100% vegetarian and only uses a total of nine natural-origin ingredients. Namely, sunflower seed oil, vitamin E, citric acid from citrus, cera bellina wax, community trade beeswax, organic andiroba oil, candeia tree’s bisabolol and community trade organic babassu oil.

The combination of these nine ingredients creates a nourishing multi-tasking beauty balm. But much like any beauty product, application is key to ensuring you get the most out of the ingredients.

Here are three unique techniques developed by skincare specialist Dr. Christine Choi Kim, designed to target tattoos, skin marks and dry skin.

The infinity massage

To enhance the vibrancy of healed tattoos:

  1. Polish tattoo with a gentle exfoliator
  2. Apply balm to clean, dry fingertips and trace the figure eight onto tattoo
  3. Repeat as often as needed
  4. Use SPF to protect tattoo

The hashtag massage

To help reduce the appearance of skin marks:

  1. Warm a small amount of the balm between clean, dry fingertips
  2. Apply with consistent pressure to skin marks tracing the hashtag symbol
  3. Finish using circular motions
  4. Use plenty of SPF

The raindrops massage

To moisturise dry skin:

  1. Apply the balm to hands, fingertips and cuticles
  2. Warm a small amount between fingertips and lightly tap dry-skinned areas with a ‘pitter-patter’ raindrops motion
  3. Finish with a light sweep over lips for extra conditioning

Massaing your skin is great for boosting circulation, bringing oxygen to the area and helping to remove toxins. It also warms the skin, which makes it easier for moisturising formulas to sink in

– Dr. Christine Choi Kim

The Body Shop Multi-Purpose Balm,€15.00

Have you got your paws on this Amazonian Saviour balm yet? If so, I’d love to hear from you! Feel free to tweet me @FilomenaKaguako 🙂

NOTE: €1.50 from every Amazonian Saviour Multi-Purpose Balm purchased will go towards building bio-bridges to help protect endangered species whilst enabling communities to live more sustainably. For more information, pop into The Body Shop or visit www.thebodyshop.ie

February Favourites!!!

product review

february faves

I was introduced to a number of new products in the last few weeks; some of which I couldn’t put down, and others I know I’ll probably never use! These little gems made it to the ‘couldn’t put down’ list as they are my ultimate February faves! 🙂

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Courture The Mats Lipstick #202, €33.00, Debenhams

february faves ysl

I was absolutely love struck when I first tried this lipstick on! I wasn’t wearing any foundation at the time and I still found it very flattering on my skin tone. I always say that if a lipstick can look good on you when you have no makeup on then you know it’s a keeper! This lippy is super pigmented and very long lasting (up to 6 hours). The formula is quite creamy for a matte lipstick, but that makes it glide on very easily. It isn’t drying at all and it doesn’t accentuate fine lines on the lips!

ALEX AND ANI Unexpected Miracles Spoon Ring, €36, Arnotts

february faves alex and ani

At the start of last month, I attended a breakfast event in Tropical Popical  for the ALEX AND ANI ring launch in Ireland. We got pampered with manicures and healthy treats, but best of all, we got a sneak peak at the brand new ring collection by this much-loved jewellery brand. Of the items I was gifted with, this Rafaelian silver wrap ring was by far my favourite. Not only is it a statement piece, but the meaning behind the ring is something I can resonate with and have always believed in. I love what it symbolises and I also how it looks on! There are four other spoon rings in this collection: Tree of Life, Hand of Fatima, Endless Knot, Lotus Peace Petals and Path of Life with equally powerfully messages.

The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector 100ml, €18.50

february faves the body shop

It comes as no shock to me that this hand protector is a best-selling product! I find it super softening on my hands and it relieves my skin even when it is at its driest. It restores the skin by adding moisture and suppleness to it and making it as smooth as silk! I am a firm believer that a woman should never leave the front door with dry paws and with this hand protector we’ll never have to! It has an unusually appealing scent of hemp which I wasn’t expecting at all.  I think it helps to add that this cruelty-free hand protector is a limited edition re-design by one of the world’s most renowned street artists – EINE. The word CHANGE communicates a positive message to remind us that the power of change is in our hands #EnrichNotExploit

Organic Surge Ultra Light Oil Control Lotion 50ml, €24.99, Allcare Pharmacies

february faves organic surge

Organic Surge is an affordable skincare range designed to give skin the loving and goodness it deserves by using natural and organic products. I was only introduced to their products last month, and of the three I tried and tested, I liked this product the most. It works amazingly well on my skin and I found that it really does regulate oil production as my skin has less of a shine whenever I use it. It is lightweight, subtly scented and has a velvety formula which absorbs very easily. I find that it always leaves me with a healthy glow!

PS Nails, €1.50, Penneys

february faves penneys

This is quite possibly the best thing that happened to me last month – I don’t even care how sad that sounds! For someone who naturally has good nail growth, I’ve been struggling to get my nails back to the length that I am used to. Acrylics, gels and shellac have done absolutely nothing to my nails but damage them, so I recently  decided to go back to basics. These nails are from Penneys PS Collection and come in a packet of 24 nails(nail glue included). I honestly wasn’t expecting them to last as long as they have but so far they have lasted me two weeks and they’re still going strong! I’ve used press-on’s before and found them very helpful with nail growth, so I’m really hoping that these guys have the same effect! Never thought I’d ever say this (so proudly too), but these are #PenneysFinest

I hope you enjoyed my post, let me know if your February faves were! Tweet me @FilomenaKaguako 🙂

Feel So Good with The Body Shop’s Seasonal Range

product review

frosted plum

As you’ve probably guessed at this stage, I’m a complete junkie when it comes to The Body Shop. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I’m a big lover of taking soothing baths and I’m absolutely drawn to everything and anything that entices my sense of smell – the one thing The Body Shop never fails at!

So when I got the opportunity to attend The Body Shop’s Feel So Good Christmas event and take some products home with me, my anticipation to relax in my tub went sky high. If you’re big into your baths then you would understand the difficulty I had in containing my excitement. The Body Shop’s NEW seasonal range includes body butters, bath frizzers, scented candles and more!

frosted plum range

The Frosted Plum range has just about everything you need to turn your Christmas into a magical one. With notes of ripe plum, magnolia and peony, this special collection is for those who want an indulgent and fruitful bath experience. Of the products I tried and tested, these are by far my top three faves:

Frosted Plum Shimmer Lotion 250ml, £8.00

frosted plum shimmer lotion

This lightweight shimmer lotion leaves a lovely sparkle on the skin after application. I used it almost immediately when I got home from the event! Due to my dark skin tone, I found that a little bit really does go a long way with this product. I recommend using this shimmer lotion on the legs before a festive night out. The sparkle will highlight your legs, which will really elongate them – hello VS model legs!

Frosted Plum Shimmer Mist, 100ml, £8.50

shimmer mist

Love, Love, LOVE!!! This globe shaped shimmer mist has a very unique fruity and floral scent. It leaves a subtle sparkle on the skin, which means you can use it during the day without looking too shimmery. It lightly fragrances the skin and leaves your body with a fresh feeling – you can’t go wrong!

Frosted Plum Candle, £10.00

plum candle

The cherry on top of any luxurious bath is a scented candle. Like the rest of the Frosted Plum range, the Frosted Plum candle has a fruity fragrance with notes of ripe plum, magnolia and peony. It really adds to the pamper experience because the aroma of the candle just fills the room up – talk about getting the full package!

These three guys are my absolute faves in this collection and I’m dying to try the Frosted Plum Lip Balm – what doesn’t thing collection have, right!?

frosted plum range

If you’ve tried any of the products from the NEW Frosted Plum range do let me know, so we can share our pampering experiences! If not, then get shopping ladies! I think it helps to add that The Body Shop has teamed up with Water Aid to help provide families in Ethiopia with drinkable water. With every specially selected gift bought this Christmas, a family in East Africa gets access to safe drinking water.

Have you done your good deed for the day? 🙂

October favourites!!!

product review

october favouritesI don’t normally do monthly favourites, but I just found that over the past month I’ve fallen in love with a couple of products that I think deserve a few minutes of fame! If you follow me on Snapchat (@FilomenaKaguako) then you might recognise one or two of the little gems I plan to talk about today. If not, here’s a roundup of the beauty and makeup products I’ve been drooling over in the past few weeks.

Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette, €46.00, Debenhams

naked smoky eye

Surprise, surprise….. not. I carry this little gem with me almost everywhere! Being a smokey eye palette, naturally, most of the shades are quite dark. However, there are a few  lighter ones that I use during the day. I found these shadows to be super pigmented and with the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, they could last a day and a half! The quality of the double-ended eyeshadow brush really helps give you the full effect of a smokey eye and ensures that you aren’t left with any unwanted creases because as you know, when it comes to achieving a strong smokey eye look, you have to blend blend blend!

The Body Shop African Ximenia Scrub, €30.50, The Body Shop

african ximenia 1

I’m just so predictable, aren’t I? I featured this product as my product of my month because when I first started using it, I literally used it every day without fail – don’t judge me, I’m just an obsessive! Thankfully, it is a super moisturising body scrub that isn’t harsh on the skin at all. It smells absolutely divine and just makes you feel like you’re giving yourself a luxurious pampering experience at home! Definitely a must try in my books, find the full review here.

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, €29.00, Debenhams

ud setting spray

This Urban Decay product was another one of my must-haves last month. I tend to have quite oily skin, so if I don’t use a primer before my makeup and a setting spray after, then I just end up looking like a hot mess! I found this particularly good for night outs because it prevents your makeup from melting or fading. I don’t wear a full face of makeup every day, but if you’re someone who does, then I’d highly recommend using a setting spray. This one in particular is oil-free, and said to last for up to 16 hours!

SOSU Gel Polish She Means Business, €7.99, SOSU

sosu by suzanne jackson she means business

You know the way we all have that one product that we have to hide from our loved ones because we’re afraid they might use it all? Well, for me, this is she! She Means Business is by far the most drool-worthy nail polishes I set eyes on last month. The warm magenta tone is feminine, strong and eye-catching. I tried this out along with the SOSU top coat and another SOSU autumn colour called Death by Chocolate. Find the full review here.

Vaseline Spray & Go, €6.49, Boots

vaseline spray and go

Some would argue that because the texture of this moisturiser is so light, it is more of a summer product. I do think this is true for the most part, but because I don’t suffer from dry skin, I can get away with using it in colder temperatures. The nozzle and spray packaging makes it super handy to have as a moisturiser and I think it does exactly what it says on the tin, it ‘moisturises in seconds.’ I find it great for when I’m rushing out the door and want to get the job done in the quickest time possible. The cocoa butter smell is breath-taking,and it also comes in pure oat and fresh aloe!

So there you have it, my secret pleasures from the last couple of weeks! If you’ve tried any of the above, do let me know in the comment section below! 🙂

New beauty range alert!!! The Body Shop Oils Of Life & Spa Of The World

Beauty/ Events/ Skincare

thebody shop spa of the world

Yesterday evening saw the launch of two new ranges from The Body Shop: Oils Of Life, a skincare range which uses natural seed oils to revive, replenish & revitalise the skin, and Spa Of The World, a collection of pampering-session products which were created using naturally sourced ingredients from different parts of the world.

To mark this special occasion, a group of bloggers were invited to get pampered in their Grafton Street store, and being an avid fan of the Italian Summer Fig, I was delighted to be asked to attend the event.

the body shop event

Unfortunately, I showed up a tad bit late, so I missed all the lovely talks and speeches. However, I still got the chance to get my beautiful henna tattoo done, indulge in some gourmet popcorn from Cornude and fresh strawberries from Nudiefoods and of course, have a look at the new collections.

the body shop oils and spa

Of all the oils, scrubs and creams I got to play around with, I must say that my favourite was the Japanese Camellia Cream. It is velvet moisturising body cream that has a soft and silky texture. I fell in love with the smell of it and found it subtle, but still very captivating. It’s definitely going down on the wish list!

the body shop cream

To make up for being late, I stayed towards the very end so I got the chance to catch up with my fellow blogger friends and even meet some new ones (the perks of being in the blogging world!).Unfortunately, I didn’t get to take home a goodie bag, as they were all out – sign of a good event!

However, the lovely Revolve girls are sending one out to me so be sure to keep an eye on my mini reality TV show a.k.a Snap Chat to see what I’ll be getting! 🙂

And before I leave you, how amazing is the design on my henna tattoo?

A big thank you to Revolve, The Body Shop, Cornude, Nudiefoods for such a fab evening!

The New Voyage Collection from The Body Shop

product review

thebody shop newvoyage collection 2

If you’re a fan of The Body Shop, then you will be very happy to hear that their New Voyage collection will be on the shelves and ready to make their way to your comforting homes, by the end of this week – let the countdown begin!

With best-selling products like Shea Body Butter and Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder, one can only assume that whatever they have lined up for us will be up to the same standards, if not better. But for those of you who are The Body Shop virgins, let me give you the gist of what to expect of the updated New Voyage collection.

Some of the top international perfumers, have created the most sensual fragrances using authentic, traditional ingredients from around the globe. Of the five fragrances in this range, I was very lucky to have the Italian Summer Fig – the highlight of this collection – sent to me for testing and review.

11749700_10155774601760447_2046066867_n

This Eau de Toilette comes in a half-globe shaped glass bottle, boxed up in a sophisticated monochrome print which is eye-catching, unique and inspired by Tuscan fabric. While the packaging did a great job in luring me in, I was very skeptical about the scent, seeing it was developed from figs – not my go to fruit at all! But much to my surprise, infused figs make for a very rare and special kind of fragrance.

The captivating aroma of the Italian Summer Fig is a harmony of femininity and sensuality. It has a delicate floral scent with a hint of green forest. While figs are the centre of the fragrance, it does have a milky touch to it also.

I was really taken aback by this eau de toilette as I genuinely didn’t expect the fragrance to be so appealing to my senses. It is light and not overpowering at all, a few spritz should give you just what you need to make it through a summer’s day – not that we get many in Ireland!

So if you like a sweet, feminine scent with a milky touch, then the Italian Summer Fig is definitely something worth trying!

italian summer fid

Other scents in the Voyage range:

Indian Night Jasmine (warm and floral)

Japanese Cherry Blossom (fruity and floral)

Atlas Mountain Rose (spicy and floral)

Fijan Water Lotus (marine and floral)

What I found particularly interesting about this Voyage range is the fact that each box incorporates a traditional design from its region of origin. I think this adds a personal touch to it, and makes if that extra bit more special! Additionally, each fragrance is available as a set of bath and body products too  – always a bonus when you’re looking for a longer-lasting scent 🙂

All fragrances are priced at €29.95 and will be available to buy from The Body Shop by the end of the week!

Are you using the right cleanser for your skin type?

Skincare/ Youthful Skin

Neutrogena visibly clear  clinique take the day off  Avene cleanance soapless gel cleanser

In one of my previous posts, I covered skin types and discussed how you can find out whether you’ve been blessed with normal skin, have combination skin, suffer from oiliness or, are at the other end of the spectrum: suffer from dryness.

While this might seem blatantly obvious to some, others can get quite confused about their skin type so if you’re unsure, you can use my method for determining your skin type as a quick guide or simply speak to a dermatologist (you really can’t go wrong here).

When you know your skin type, it makes shopping for the right beauty product slightly easier. Usually, it is the first thing beauty consultants will ask you when you’re looking for a product or in this case, a cleanser.

Cleanser Options

Gel cleansers usually lather or foam when contacted with water. They are formulated to fight blemish-causing bacteria as well as oil build up without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Gel cleansers work best with people who have oily or combination skin and are prone to breakouts.

Suggestions: Clinique Wash-Away Gel Cleanser, €22.00 BOOTS, Avene Cleanance Soapless Gel Cleanser, €14.99 BOOTS, Neutrogena Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Facial Wash €6.29 BOOTS

gel1

Balm cleansers leave a moisturising cushion on the skin. They condition the skin while cleansing and are suitable for all skin types except oily skin.

Suggestions: Clinique Take the Day Off, €29.00 BOOTS, Champneys Super Rich Cleansing Balm, €16.50, BOOTS, The Body Shop Camomile Sumtuous Cleansing Butter, €14.95, The Body Shop

Remember, the purpose of using a face cleanser is to get rid of lurking bacteria, unwanted sweat, worn out makeup and the oil that builds up throughout the day. If you use a cleanser that is suitable for your skin you have less of a chance of stripping your skin of its natural oils. Cleanse twice a day EVERY day and always use an SPF! 🙂
