Product Review: Too Faced Melted Lipstick

product review

too faced ruby

So this day last week, I did something different.  I got myself a product I wouldn’t normally go for. I’ve always been a matte girl when it comes to lippies, so any lip product with a bit of a gloss tends to scare me – think hair down on a windy day, painful!

I must say, my stress and concerns about glossy lipsticks were quickly put to rest after I started using this Holy Grail product. This liquified lipstick by Too Faced has definitely set the bar high for any other glossy lipsticks I will be looking at from here on out.

too faced swatch 2

This shade in particular is called Ruby. It’s a blood red that is highly pigmented and buildable. One coat leaves a slightly matte finish and wears almost like a stain. However if you much rather a glossier finish, you can build it up! It isn’t overly hydrating when wearing glossy nor is it too drying as a stain. It feels very comfortable and lightweight on the lips, which I think is particularly important when wearing it glossy.

It wears really well during the day, especially when you use a lip liner before hand. The first time I used this lipstick without a lip pencil, I wasn’t impressed with the fact that I had to constantly reapply during the day – not something a lot of people enjoy doing. So I would definitely recommend using a lip pencil with it as it does absolute wonders with the longevity of it.

According to Too Faced, the Melted Liquified Long wear Lipsticks have

the staying power of stain, the intense colour of a liquid lipstick and the high shine of a gloss in one long-wear formula.

Mine certainly tick all three boxes and I can already see myself getting another bold shade -or two.

The colours in this collection range from vibrant tones to more neutral shades and are available to purchase in Debenhams for €23.  Can you see yourself getting one? Tweet me @FilomenaKaguako 🙂

Uncovered: Body count matters

Sexuality/ Uncovered

body count

There are a few ways I could have written this article. The first, would have been to touch the topic on the surface and conclude that people who worry about body count (the number of sexual partners a person has) are usually from a narrow-minded culture who don’t see women and men as equal and think that a woman should never sleep with more men than she can count on both hands.  Either that or I could have just started with ‘Hi my name is Filomena and my body count is XXXX’ – throw in a few extra X’s for the shock factor  – and then just patiently waited for people who have absolutely no right to comment on how I live my life to pass judgment and make unnecessary remarks.

But see this is the thing, do we as humans ever have the right to define or police a person’s sexuality? No, we don’t, but we do it anyways. We have been brought up in a world where women in particular are deemed to be sluts if they have a high number of sexual partners.  She loses her value as a woman, she is no longer desirable or worthy of love because of course, the number of men she’s given her body to is a reflection of how much respect she has for herself.

But why is it always women? Why do women always get the short end of the stick? I can’t think of a single male who would ever be concerned about his body count. Heck, most of them don’t even know what theirs is! But God forbid a woman ever loses track of how many men she’s slept with – it is the crime of all crimes. You’re a woman. You’re supposed to know how many people you’ve had sex with. You’re supposed to keep your number low because like cars, your value decreases the more you’ve been ‘used.’

What saddens me the most is that certain cultures actually promote men to have multiple mates. They entitle it. And to me, this is where the whole body count craze becomes a gender thing.  They endorse the idea of men having several partners. In fact, men are praised for it because there is nothing degrading or belittling about having more than one partner if you have the ‘privilege’ of being a man. And it is usually the same people who worship men for their promiscuity that regard women with a high body count as whores.

master key

This brings me to another issue.

What exactly is a high body count? What I consider as high is very different to what you may regard as high. The notion ‘high body count’ varies from person to person. There is no global agreement as to what constitutes as a high body count number, so why do some of us hold it with so much significance?

I have a group of female friends who hold body count with remarkably high regard. Who believe that exceeding a certain number of sexual partners is something to be ashamed of.  This way of thinking made me raise all sorts of questions. For starters, is it just an African thing? Have we been conditioned to believe that as women of African descent, we should remain as pure as possible if we wanted to be worthy enough to secure a husband? After all, it is my African friends in particular who are so infatuated by this.

Out of curiosity, I decided to ask a few male friends to get their perspective, and to try to make sense of it all. The men I queried were all of different ages, races, backgrounds and beliefs, and although some of them felt that a woman’s number shouldn’t be looked at in isolation. The majority were of the opinion that a woman’s body count does matter. Some even admitted that they would look at a woman differently if she had what they considered to be a high body count.  I must say, I was genuinely gobsmacked by some of their responses:

“To me personally it’s very important. I look at a woman very differently depending on the number of men she’s slept with and I don’t think the same applies to men. If a woman your age has slept with 15 men or more I consider her to be a bit of a slut” – anonymous male, age 28

“Yea, I do feel it’s important. Many guys would not take a woman seriously if they knew she’s been around. Hence why men like to be with a woman who isn’t very well known,” – anonymous male, age 26

“A key that can open many locks is a master key. But a lock that has been opened by many keys is worthless. Double standard, I’m afraid” – anonymous male, age 33

“Guys behind the scenes they talk about this stuff, particularly if they’re settling down with a girl. If they only want to be with her once, they don’t really care. In fact they nearly like that she’s been with loads of people because they know she’s easy and a sure thing. But for the purpose of taking her home to your parents, that’s a whole different ball game,” – anonymous male, age 33

“If you think about how men and women evolved sexually, you will see that it doesn’t really make sense for a female to be promiscuous. In fact, it can be detrimental,” – anonymous male, age 32

“Does it matter to whom? The individual? or society in general? In case of the individual, no it doesn’t matter. In the case of society, yes it does matter. It matters to men. It is best for a woman not to discuss it at all. No man wants to hear it,” – anonymous male, age 31

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what this says about society as a whole. But instead of concluding that this whole fixation with body count is down to culture and gender alone, I’ve decided to keep the topic open for discussion.

Thoughts?

5 exercises for toned legs

fitness

 20160315_172600-1

I’m often complimented on how toned my legs are. If it’s not ‘your legs have a lovely shape,’ it’s ‘oh my God, they’re so toned.’  Either way, they do get attention – more attention than my “booty gains” ever will! Although I’ve always had good muscle tone in my legs, I must admit that I’ve had to do certain exercises to keep them that way  – can’t give genetics all the credit for it, I’m afraid!

Here are some of my top leg toning exercises:

Walking Lunges (3 x 15 rep)

lunge

  1. Start with your feet shoulder width apart and both hands on each hip.
  2. Take a step forward with your right leg while flexing the knees to drop to your hips. Keep going down until the back knee nearly touches the ground.
  3. Use the force of the heel of your lead foot and extend both knees to bring yourself back up.
  4. Take another step forward with your left foot this time and keep repeating the lunge on the opposite legs.

Tips: Posture should be upright and your front knee shouldn’t go past your front foot. You can use dumb bells if you want to add some weight.

Wall Sit (30 – 45 seconds)

  1. Stand with back and heels against a wall.
  2. Walk your feet out in front of you and the spread them apart.
  3. Slide your back down the wall until knees are at a 90 degree angle.
  4. Hold for required time and then repeat.

Tips: Your knees should be aligned with your ankles. You can hold a medicine ball between your knees to work the muscles more!

Standing Calf Raises (2 x 12 rep)

calf raises

  1. Stand on the edge of a step and rest one hand against a wall for balance.
  2. Raise your heels a couple of inches above the edge of the step so that you’re on your tiptoes.
  3. Hold for a few seconds and then lower your heels, you should feel the stretch in you calf muscle.

Tips: Go up on your tiptoe and lower your heel as much as you can. Use the entire width of your foot to push.

Leg Press Machine (3 x 15)

This is quite possibly my favourite machine at the gym. There are days when I go in specifically for it ! It’s great for working all the lower leg muscles like the quads, hamstrings and glutes. At this stage I can press about 70kg, but it took me a good few months to get to that point. Always start with a lower weight and then build your way up!  My main tip for using this machine is never ever lock your knees in when you’re doing your reps! Locking your knees in puts a serious amount of stress on the knee joint which could lead to an injury.

Single Leg Dead Lift (3 x 15)

single dead lift

  1. Hold a kettlebell on one hand and then stand on the side you’re holding the kettle bell.
  2. Keep that knee slightly bent and lower the weight while raising and extending the other leg backwards.
  3. Lower the kettlebell until your body is parallel to the ground.
  4. Return to upright position and repeat.

Tips: Start with using your body weight first and then you can add weights once you find the right balance and form!

What are your favourite leg toning exercises!? Would love to know! Tweet me @FilomenaKaguako 🙂

February Favourites!!!

product review

february faves

I was introduced to a number of new products in the last few weeks; some of which I couldn’t put down, and others I know I’ll probably never use! These little gems made it to the ‘couldn’t put down’ list as they are my ultimate February faves! 🙂

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Courture The Mats Lipstick #202, €33.00, Debenhams

february faves ysl

I was absolutely love struck when I first tried this lipstick on! I wasn’t wearing any foundation at the time and I still found it very flattering on my skin tone. I always say that if a lipstick can look good on you when you have no makeup on then you know it’s a keeper! This lippy is super pigmented and very long lasting (up to 6 hours). The formula is quite creamy for a matte lipstick, but that makes it glide on very easily. It isn’t drying at all and it doesn’t accentuate fine lines on the lips!

ALEX AND ANI Unexpected Miracles Spoon Ring, €36, Arnotts

february faves alex and ani

At the start of last month, I attended a breakfast event in Tropical Popical  for the ALEX AND ANI ring launch in Ireland. We got pampered with manicures and healthy treats, but best of all, we got a sneak peak at the brand new ring collection by this much-loved jewellery brand. Of the items I was gifted with, this Rafaelian silver wrap ring was by far my favourite. Not only is it a statement piece, but the meaning behind the ring is something I can resonate with and have always believed in. I love what it symbolises and I also how it looks on! There are four other spoon rings in this collection: Tree of Life, Hand of Fatima, Endless Knot, Lotus Peace Petals and Path of Life with equally powerfully messages.

The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector 100ml, €18.50

february faves the body shop

It comes as no shock to me that this hand protector is a best-selling product! I find it super softening on my hands and it relieves my skin even when it is at its driest. It restores the skin by adding moisture and suppleness to it and making it as smooth as silk! I am a firm believer that a woman should never leave the front door with dry paws and with this hand protector we’ll never have to! It has an unusually appealing scent of hemp which I wasn’t expecting at all.  I think it helps to add that this cruelty-free hand protector is a limited edition re-design by one of the world’s most renowned street artists – EINE. The word CHANGE communicates a positive message to remind us that the power of change is in our hands #EnrichNotExploit

Organic Surge Ultra Light Oil Control Lotion 50ml, €24.99, Allcare Pharmacies

february faves organic surge

Organic Surge is an affordable skincare range designed to give skin the loving and goodness it deserves by using natural and organic products. I was only introduced to their products last month, and of the three I tried and tested, I liked this product the most. It works amazingly well on my skin and I found that it really does regulate oil production as my skin has less of a shine whenever I use it. It is lightweight, subtly scented and has a velvety formula which absorbs very easily. I find that it always leaves me with a healthy glow!

PS Nails, €1.50, Penneys

february faves penneys

This is quite possibly the best thing that happened to me last month – I don’t even care how sad that sounds! For someone who naturally has good nail growth, I’ve been struggling to get my nails back to the length that I am used to. Acrylics, gels and shellac have done absolutely nothing to my nails but damage them, so I recently  decided to go back to basics. These nails are from Penneys PS Collection and come in a packet of 24 nails(nail glue included). I honestly wasn’t expecting them to last as long as they have but so far they have lasted me two weeks and they’re still going strong! I’ve used press-on’s before and found them very helpful with nail growth, so I’m really hoping that these guys have the same effect! Never thought I’d ever say this (so proudly too), but these are #PenneysFinest

I hope you enjoyed my post, let me know if your February faves were! Tweet me @FilomenaKaguako 🙂

Uncovered: Can cheating ever be justified?

Uncovered

cheating satc 2

Before you start attacking me or accusing me of oppressing female sexuality again, just hear me out for a second here.

I re-watched the first Sex and the City film the other night and one of the scenes got me thinking about a topic I’ve been meaning to write about: cheating. A topic we’ve been conditioned to regard as being black and white with no grey area at all. Cheating is wrong and we should never excuse it, forgive it, or accept it, right?

Now for those of you who haven’t seen the film or just need to refreshen your memory, I’ll give you this particular storyline in a nutshell: Miranda, a career-driven woman who comes across as being very guarded and emotionless and her husband Steve, an easy going man who appears to be more in touch with his emotions, hit a bump in the road in their marriage: they stop having sex.

Now I can’t imagine this being out of the ordinary for a married couple especially with the pressure of work, children and other responsibilities. But a combination of zero spark in the bedroom and Miranda’s neglectful attitude towards her husband’s emotional needs causes him to have sex with another woman. He wasn’t confronted about his infidelity, nor he wasn’t keeping it a secret from her. He outright confessed his wrong doing and clearly felt awful for what he did.

cheat quote

I don’t condone cheating at all but from watching the series I know that it was completely out of character for Steve to do something like that and for some reason, my initial reaction to watching his confession was ‘how is she even surprised that he cheated?’  Now the fact that I don’t like Miranda could have played a part in why I reacted this way when I first watched the film. But it also made raise a rather intriguing question:  can cheating ever be justified? Are there ever instances where we can understand why it happens?

I mean in Miranda’s case, I do think she was a contribution to his behaviour.  I’m not saying she deserved what happened nor am I saying her contribution to his dishonesty justifies it. But because my initial reaction to him confessing was ‘how is she not surprised that he cheated,’ I want to know if I am alone on this matter and think it is a grey area.

We’re human, we’re flawed, we have many imperfections and we are going to slip every single day. But is cheating the kind of ‘slip’ that can ever be justified? Is there ever room for justifying one of the worst betrayals in a relationship, especially when vows have been said? It’s a tricky one.

10 powerful quotes from The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

lifestyle

the devil wears prada cover

With London Fashion Week starting today, I thought it would be an appropriate time to write about something fashion related. Now I’m no fashion blogger. So fashion-obsessed readers, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. But The Devil Wears Prada is quite possibly one of the best fashion films of all time – well for me anyways!

It is my go-to film for when I’m feeling down, tired, happy or when I just need something to watch! I honestly can’t think of a time when watching this film wouldn’t be suitable – okay, maybe not the best pick for when you’re horny. But putting crazy teenage hormones aside, The Devil Wears Prada is always a good idea!

Although it was released nearly a decade ago –  I know, such a long time ago! I’ve always felt that this film teaches some very important life lessons – ones that go beyond fashion. It is a film that uses the fashion industry to depict powerful messages about appearances, social status and success. As well as portraying the fashion world in a not-so glamorous way and showing us how ruthless and ugly it can really be, it gives us an insight into what can happen when we let our jobs define us.

So without further ado, here are some of the most powerful messages and quotes that I get from watching The Devil Wears Prada, every, single, time:

  • Nigel: “Yes, that’s really what this multi-billion dollar industry is about anyways – inner beauty”

Reference #4

  • Miranda: “I thought you would be different I said to myself. Go ahead. Take a chance. Hire the smart fat girl. I had hope. My God I live for it. Anyways you ended up disappointing me more than any of the other silly girls”

I think these quotes promote the idea that beauty isn’t skin deep in the world of fashion and that physical attractiveness is essential to be respected in this industry. The notion that women of average weight are sadly regarded as ‘fat’ and that if you want to make it in the fashion world, you cannot be a ‘size 14’

Quotes on career and success

Reference #5

  • Andy: “My personal life is hanging by a thread.”
  • Nigel: “Join the club. That’s what happens when you start doing well in work darling. Let me know when your whole life goes out in smoke. It means it’s time for a promotion.”

 Reference #6

  • Nigel: “When the time is right she will pay me back.”
  • Andy: “You sure about that?”
  • Nigel: “No, but I hope for the best. I have to.”

 Reference #7

  • Miranda: “Oh you chose. You chose to get ahead. Want this life? Those choices are necessary.”

These references shows the ruthlessness of the fashion world and how working hard can’t always guarantee you a promotion because there is always someone out there who wants to take your place.

Quotes on reputation and social status

Reference #8

Nigel: “You have no idea how many legends have walked these halls and what’s worse is you don’t even care. Because this place where so many people would die to work, you only deign to work and you want to know why she doesn’t give you a gold star on your homework at the end of the day. Wake up sweet heart.”

Reference #9

Miranda: “Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us”

Reference #10

Miranda: “Another divorce splashed across Page Six. I can just imagine what they’re gonna write about me. The Dragon Lady. Career-obsessed. Snow Queen drives away another Mr. Priestly…..Anyways I don’t really care what anybody write about me. But my girls. It’s just…another disappointment, another let down, another father figure gone.”

I find the last quote particularly powerful because it raises a topic I often discuss with my close group of friends – can women really have it all; a successful career, a loving marriage and a happy family? Or will we always have to compromise one of the three? A question nobody can truly answer.

All in all, I think this film raises a lot of relevant topics outside of fashion. Can I just call it the greatest movie of all time or would I be pushing it – I have a tendency to do that alright!

I hope you a fabulous Friday and a fantastic weekend! For those of you who will be working, remember “I love my job, I love my job, I love my job” 🙂

Let’s talk about skin, hair and nails

product review

Perfectil original skim hair and nails

Growing up with acne-prone skin has turned me into a bit of a skincare junkie: from beauty tools to beauty products, I pretty much like to get my paws on everything and anything that will give my complexion even the slightest glow!

So when I read reviews on how Perfectil has been transforming people’s skin, hair & nails, I decided to do a bit of research myself!

Perfectil, a one-a-day beauty supplement, contains over 20 micronutrients that contribute to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails – every girl’s dream!

Vitamins B2, B3 and biotin are the active ingredients when it comes to maintaining normal skin. While the minerals selenium and zinc are responsible for the maintenance of normal hair and nails.

These nutrients are delivered through the very deepest level of the bloodstream to work their magic – I guess beauty really does come from within!

Perfectil is to be taken on a full stomach each day with a meal and usually takes about six weeks before results start to show!

There are some precautions when it comes to taking these supplements, particularly for pregnant women or breastfeeders. Like anything, it’s always a good idea to read the cautions before getting started!

Now that the stuff nobody likes to talk about is out of the way (hazards and cautions),  what do you guys think!?

Will you be running into your nearest chemist to give Perfectil a try? Let me know if you will or already have!

As always, snap or tweet me @Filomenakaguako chat soon! 🙂

Supplements are available in 30 tablets  ( €12.99 ) in pharmacies nationwide! Check out www.perfectil.ie for more info!

January Favourites!!!

product review

jan faves

It’s never too late to talk about favourites, especially when it comes to the products I plan on sharing with you today! In the last few weeks some of these gems have been an absolute saviour to me. So sit back and relax while I let you in on what products I found difficult to put down over January!

Eucerin Dermo PURIFYER Scrub 100ml, €11.10, HICKEYS

eucerin jan faves

I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys are having dreams about Eucerin at this stage! This brand has been featured in my last few monthly favourites! I am honestly in love with the Dermo PURIFYER range as it has proved to work amazingly on my skin. This oil-free scrub works very gently on the skin, which makes it suitable for everyday use. Also, the lactic acid and pore-refining micro particles help reduce the appearance of blackheads and blemishes. Best part? It is non-comedogenic so it doesn’t block pores!

TRESemmé Salon Finish Extra Hold Hairspray 500ml, €6.73, BOOTS

tresemme jan faves

When it comes to my hair (slash weave) there are certain brands that I use repeatedly because they never fail to deliver. TRESemmé is up on the list so the results of this products didn’t come as a huge shock to me at all! It is fast drying, has a long-lasting hold, and doesn’t leave your with that awful dry feeling that some hair sprays do. J’adore!

Vera Wang Princess 30ml, €50.75, Debenhams

vera wang princess jan faves

They say the scent of every perfume you have reminds you of a certain period of your life. I first got Vera Wang Princess a good few years ago and then I stopped using it. I had forgotten how much I loved this scent until I started using it again only to fall in love with it all over again. I was absolutely thrilled to have this gifted to me in the last few weeks as I haven’t stopped using it since. It has a very feminine and youthful floral scent with a touch of dark chocolate. It is light, airy and not overpowering at all!

7th Heaven Dead Sea Mud Pac 20g, €1.40, HICKEYS

mud mask jan faves

I love a good face mask. Whether it is homemade or store-bought, I am all for a good face mask. Now, I don’t normally go for the little packets they sell in the chemist, but for some reason I decided to give this particular one try – and I’m glad I did! This hard drying cleansing mask leaves my skin feeling unbelievably smooth! Unlike some hard drying face mask, this comes off very easily! Cheap, cheerful, and does a good job! Can’t go wrong!

Lancôme Effortless Chic Eyes, €27.50, Arnotts

lancome jan faves

Yes, yes and yes! If I could only choose three products to give my face some life, then I would choose these three! This Lancôme set has a lash-lengthening mascara, a lip plumping gloss (slight obsession with making my lips appear bigger), and a kohl black liner. When I don’t have much time in the morning, I do my eyebrows (of course), then throw these little guys into my handbag! This trio will ensure your face never looks lifeless – even when you’re feeling basic! You’ll definitely get your money’s worth with this!

Hope you enjoyed this post, let me know if you’re a fan of any of these! Also, don’t forget to enter my YSL giveaway! I have up to €100 worth of YSL makeup to giveaway ! Again, may the best woman win! 🙂

8 types of people you’ll meet at the gym

fitness/ lifestyle

gym goers

Being a regular gym goer means I come across a wide range of people who share the same passion for health & fitness as I do.  I bump into a few once every blue moon.  While others have me questioning whether or not they live there.

Since I go at least four times a week, I think it’s safe to say that I’ve gotten to learn the habits of avid gym nuts and have witnessed some of the most unfathomable behaviour from my fellow gym lovers. So here’s a list of eight ‘types’ of people you’re bound to meet at the gym:

gym goers judging

1. The selfie king

Sometimes you get the impression that the selfie king goes to the gym just to take selfies. It almost seems like they document every workout from start to finish – and with little to no shame! One or two selfies? Absolutely fine! Check in on Facebook? Again, totally normal. But is a two hundred second Snapchat story really necessary? I dunno…..

2. The makeup addict

You’ll never see the makeup addict without makeup. Before her workout, she is caked in it and after her workout, she is just as caked (what setting spray does she use and where can I find it, right?). The makeup addict won’t dare to break a sweat because she fears she’ll rub off her perfectly drawn brows. If it weren’t for the yoga pants, the sports top and kicks, you’d never guess that the makeup addict is going to the gym.

3. The show off

I can already sense you rolling your eyes as you think of someone who fits the bill. No matter what fitness club you’re in, you’ll surely come across that one person who makes a point of letting everyone and anyone know that their dead lifting game is unbelievably strong. They also walk around half naked so that they can strut their stuff. #Gainz #FitFam #Lean. We get it, you’re not new to this at all.

gym goers gym rats

4. The serious one

This person takes gym time a tad bit too seriously. You always see them carrying around a post-workout shake alongside an unusually large collection of workout gadgets that only a true die-hard fitness fanatic could own. The serious one drinks at least three litres of water a day, works out every single day and even weighs their food! There’s no stopping this guy!

5. The chilled one

The chilled one takes even the most intense workouts in stride. They calmly float about in the weights room as if they haven’t a bother in the world. These are the types of people you need to have around when you pull a leg muscle and have a near-death moment because you can always rely on the aura of the chilled one to calm you down.

6. The newbie

You can spot a newbie from a mile away. He or she jumps from one machine to the other in hopes that they will eventually figure out how one works because they are too shy to ask anyone around them. When the newbie finally discovers how to use a machine, they do more sets that required and then call it a day – bless them!

gym goers newbies

7. The two bestos

When you see one, you see the other. They are never apart. They attend every single class together and only use the treadmills when they can find ones next to each other. In the world of the two bestos, the gym isn’t a place to sweat. It’s a place to socialise and have a bit of a laugh.

8. The nudist

The nudist tends to prance around in, well, the nude (in case the name didn’t give it away). The second they get into the changing room, they strip down bare and walk around with pride. They’ll try to make small talk with you so you don’t feel uncomfortable although you never know where to look. Sharing the changing room with a nudist is one thing, but when it comes to sharing the sauna, then all bets are off!

What kind of people do you encounter at the gym? If you’re an active gym goer like myself, then which ‘type’ are you!? I’ll let you decide which one you think  I am! 🙂
