October Favourites!!!

product review

20161101_090312

Hello all! I’m back from a short blogging break! 🙂 Without getting into the details of why I needed to take a breather, let’s just say it was very much needed!

As a sweet ‘comeback,’ I’ve decided on a short and light-hearted post for you guys – I think it would be wise to save the heavier topics for when you’ve all recovered from the abandonment issues I’ve left you with!

So without further ado, here are the top three makeup products that I couldn’t take a break from over the past few weeks:

YOUNGBLOOD Contour Palette, €43

20161101_090350

Anyone who knows me would tell you that I am all about the natural look. I don’t like when my face looks or feels cakey as I find it rather uncomfortable. I never have that problem with this  little gem as it is light, breathable and adds a natural glow to your skin while adding definition to your face at the same time. It has three shades for highlighting and three for contouring, so it is suitable for a number of different skin tones. It is small and compact, and has everything you need for a natural chiseled look! Available online on Youngblood Ireland Direct.

Too Faced Melted Matte Drop Dead Red, €23, Debenhams

too-faced-meltedmatte

If you follow me online or in real life (whatever you’re into), then you would know that I’ve recently added two more lippies to my Too Faced collection. To say I am in love with my new buys would be a complete understatement! The two shades look quite similar in the photo , but when you have them on they’re incredibly different. The Melted Chocolate leaves more of a glossy finish, while the Melted matte glides on like a gloss, but then dries to an ultra-matte finish. I’m a massive fan of matte lippies as well as dark shades so I felt like the Melted Matte in Drop Dead Red was made for me! If you’ve been on the hunt for the perfect Autumn lippy, your search ends now 🙂

Benefit KA-BROW Eyebrow Cream-Gel Colour, €26 , Arnotts

ka-brow-benefit

Again, if you know me at all, you would know that I am brow crazy. I wouldn’t be one to judge others on their appearance, but if there is anything I’d call someone out on, it is their brows – sorry, not sorry! A defined brow makes the world of a difference to your face. This Benefit ka-BROW has exactly what you need to achieve flawless brows. This cream gel comes with an angled brush on the cap which you can use to go from a day look to a night. It is buildable, longlasting and waterproof – no need to worry about the rain washing your brows off, we do live in Ireland after all!

Have you tried any of these products!? Would love to hear your thoughts ! Tweet me @FilomenaKaguako 🙂

Review: W7 Cosmetics Ebony Range

Makeup/ product review

w7 cosmetics

If you follow me on Instagram, then you would know that I was recently sent a full range of makeup products from a brand called w7 cosmetics. Some of you may have come across w7 products in your local chemist, as they are widely known for having Naked palette dupes – gotta love a good duplicate!

W7 cosmetics has been in Ireland for the past three years. In such a short space of time, the budget-friendly brand is in over 400 stores nationwide and has over one hundred individual makeup products for eyes, lips, skin and more.

The products I’m going to be reviewing today are from their new Ebony range, which hasn’t officially been launched in Ireland. However, it is available to buy online from Amazon or Ebay.

Without further ado, let’s see what w7 cosmetics has for us dark skinned gals!

SHAPE & DEFINE €6.50

w7 ebony shape and define

These palettes are available in three different shades; light , medium and deep. Each palette comes with a compact mirror, and a short guide on how you can achieve that Kim K look:

Apply the sculpting powder to your cheeks. Then apply the highlighting powder above and below the cheekbones for a defined contoured look

Light Shade

            w7 medium w7 light swatch

As much as I love the highlighter, as you can see, this contour shade isn’t right for me at all. It is far too light, and since highlighting and contouring is about creating shadows, the light palette would just defeat the purpose of it for me. I think this shade would suit somebody who has a fairer skin tone than myself.

Medium Shade

               w7 light     w7 medium swatch

The medium shade on the other hand, works a lot better with my skin tone. Out of the three, this was definitely my favourite. It gives my face just the definition it needs. With a few brush strokes, it doesn’t give a hugely obvious highlight and contour, making it perfect for day time wear.

Deep Shade

               w7 deep       w7 deep dark

Although the deeper shade looks ridiculously dark, I think it works really for nights out. Since it is quite pigmented, you don’t need to go to heavy with it at all. With the right techniques, this shade can give you that sculpted and defined look without looking like a drag!

BLUSH PERFECTION €3.95

w7 blush perfection

These blushes are available in four different shades. Sand Dune, Pink Sands and Sea Shell have a matte finish, while Red Dawn has a bit of a shimmer in it.

Sand Dune

w7 blush sand dune

This shade is definitely too light for my skin tone, it has a bit of a coral hue to it. It would suit someone who has a fairer skin tone than me and wants to create that natural ‘no make up’ look.

Pink Sands

w7 blush pink

This shade has a pinkier hue. It is one of my favourites for day time makeup because it gives you a natural flush. With this shade, I can have people thinking ‘I woke up like this.’:)

Sea Shell

w7 blush 3

I quite liked this shade and I found that the colour and texture really works well with the shape and define palette. It is slightly darker than the other two, but doesn’t make your face look too heavy. It is very much suited for night wear.

Red Dawn

w7 shimmer

This ones for our sparkling divas. I don’t usually like shimmering blushers, but I was surprised by this one. It works well on the days I don’t have a highlight, but I still want to brighten up my face.

Overall, I was impressed by these w7 products as they were super easy to apply and they set really well on the face. I was very surprised by the quality of them and think they’re an absolute steal! It’s also worth mentioning that the packaging does not give the price away s it doesn’t look cheap at all. You would never guess by looking at them that they’re so affordable!

ME WEARING W7 COSMETICS

Here, I used the Shape & Define medium palette with Sea Shell blush and the tiniest bit of Red Dawn:

Other products in this range:

  • Trio Concealer €3.95
  • Lipsticks €3.95
  • Cream to powder foundation €4.95

Hope you enjoyed my write up, keep an eye on the blog for more reviews of other products from this range 🙂

Highlighting and contouring

Beauty

Highlighting attracts and contouring detracts

Those are the cardinal rules to highlighting and contouring, something that anybody who has even the slightest interest in makeup should know so if you’re going to know anything about makeup, let it be this….

Do you ever wonder how Tyra Banks has a nose that looks so perfectly narrow, or how Kim K has those perfectly shaped cheekbones? Well believe you me, it’s not all natural and let me assure you that this look can be achieved by everyone and anyone with this simple little ‘trick’ called highlighting and contouring.

So what exactly is highlighting and contouring??
It’s all about bringing dimension and glow to the face! With the highlighting you bring out your features and draw attention to certain areas while the contouring does the opposite by diminishes other areas, almost like a shadow effect.
So what do you need:
1. Highlighters – Mac prep + prime highlighter is great (just under 30E)
 2.Contours – E.L.F Contouring Blush & Bronzer (cheap and cheerful! $3)
3.Foundation –  the usual (it should match your skin tone)
4.Setting powder – optional
Note:
Always moisturize your face before applying any make up! You don’t want your face to appear dry….
how to highlight and contour

Kim K revealed…..

-Now that you know what you need, first start with applying the highlighter in the V area of your forehead, down your nose, under the eyes, cheekbones, on your brow line and chin as pictured above.
-Using a shade much darker than usual, contour under the cheekbones, on the temple, near the hair line, your jawline and contour the sides of the nose as well to make it appear thinner.
Note: if you look a bit scary after this, you’re on the right track!
-Now with a foundation that matches your skin tone blend everything in with a large brush and the lines should fade away gradually, eventually you see dimension just  blend blend blend!
If you use a setting powder, apply lightly to the face but generally, after this 3 step process you should have a beautifully defined , sculpted, yet NATURAL look!
This process takes the longest in my makeup application so if you spend over an hour on your face and you’re NOT highlighting and contouring, then I really don’t know what you’re doing!
What takes you the longest to complete in your makeup application process?
Feel free leave comments and share!
Thanks for reading yet another long post! Hope you’ve enjoyed it!
